Just wondering how many .308 Varminters there was out there ? I know its not the first choice for the job but my .308 spits those 125 gn TNT's at some speed ! Accuracy with 150 gn spbt speer is good enough for head shots on rabbit target at 200 yards that was playing with a deer load !

What experince have you guys had .308's and varmints...... and bullets ??? Lets hear from you ? Im thinking of fitting a full length silencer heard it will also improve accuracy and cuts out muzzle fast/jump..............

I used 125gr Nosler BTs in a 26" barrel .308.
Haven't done much in recent years.
Did some 1" groups at 200yds with 180gr Norma factory rounds once.
I shot foxes, mainly, with the .308 but am now getting a .223 for the job.
Shot a fox once, from the front with the .308. The bullet didn't exit and when I picked it up by the tail, it was like carrying a bag of water.

Shoot. It's safer than sex!

My benchrest/sniper 308 doubles for varmints. I just use the same old super accurate handloaded 150's or LC match ammo. derf

Englander: I bought a Remington 700 Varminter in caliber 308 Winchester many years ago. It also shot amazingly well and did so with most every bullet I tried in it! I used it for Antelope Hunting a couple of years but what I had initially intended to use it mostly for was long range Varminting! This was to include long range Rock Chucks, Coyotes and Priairie Dogs in the wind.
Well you touched on the glitch there in your post the recoil was just way to much to assess my own shots! Back then I often made Varmint Safaris on my own and with no spotter the long range shots were either hits or unknown by how far, and in what direction, misses!
I sold that Rifle to a friend who was going to get into Silohuette Competition and he did well with that rig.
I think the recoil and muzzle jump even with a muzzle brake would still be to much for self sighting of ones shots! I don't see many of the 30 cals in the Colony Varmint Fields myself but I do know some folks use them.
Continued good luck with your rig!

I would love to get a cz 550 heavy barrelled .308 for a windy day varmint gun, I have heard good things about them. And it would be great in out back N.S.W.

I say go for it if you want one.

Englander,

I have been shooting some 68 gr. H.P. from Wild Cat Bullets. I haven't done a lot of testing yet to see what the accuracy is on these things but so far it looks pretty good.

I am shooting them out of a 19.5 inch barrel and getting 3590 fps. I have to try some faster powder as I am getting quite a muzzle flash with 4198. It really makes the .308 fun to shoot and you can easily see where you are hitting.

I often use a Remington 600 in 308 that I have painted camo. It's ugly but it works. I use a
Leupold 1x4 variable on it. I use either 125 Nosler ballistic tips, 130 Sierra Hollow points, 110 gr Speer
hollow points, or LC 147 gr FMJ's. Since I am not saving pelts it doesn't matter if the coyote has
holes in it. I find that the short rifle handles well when the shots are close and still does the
job when they are holding out at 200 yards.

I'm usually hunkered down in amoung sagebrush or under a Juniper tree and the short, easy to handle
rifle works well. I have had no problems using a 308 Win.

I bought a Reminton 700 Varmit Synthetic in .308 many years ago. It is all I use for varmits, hunt deer with it too sometimes. I like the .308 for precision shooting. It is accuracte with many loads and the larger size makes for less wind drift.

.308..Thats what I'm talkin' about.
I shoot everything from chipmunks to deer with my Savage.
I find Speer 125 TNT's spectacular upon impact on groundhogs.
Way out there, the Savage seems to like 168 gr.Gamekings.
