If I ever get to the States for a coyote and bobcat shoot what would be a good rifle to bring? Would my 6PPC be good all round? I'd fear that it would be pretty destructive on pelts? I have used it on pigs and roe deer, and saw devistating terminal ballistics and horrible exit woulds, albeit with a 90gn projectile. Hope would the 22PPC fair, with much lighter bullets, say ballistic tips on bobcat, coyote and wolf? Thanking in advace for any info I can gather. Express this is a very debatable topic and it oftan depends on where you live. Example, In Arizona where I live... all my coyotes are thin, even the large ones are thin. In cooler or less arid enviroments coyotes can and are thicker animals. This is seemingly not much of a difference but with some varmit bullets on broadside shots, it can make all the difference. I shoot coyotes all year and for the most part I dont worry about their hides. That being said I find myself shooting most with a 22 mag (which does little dammage to the hide) or I shoot them with anything else. I have had a good running succcess with my 17 Hornet (which doesnt exit). You might try a smaller caliber then 6mm and use Vmax s' from HRNDY. If you are interested in cats, a mountain lion makes for a wonderful hunt. I dont know about others on this Board but I only hunt them without dogs. Express, Your 6mmPPC would be fine all round. Your 22PPC will be good for everything but wolf. Even though, recently, I killed 2 adult wolves with my 222Rem-50gr.BT's. I had lots of time to make a perfect shot. If a shot is less than perfect with a 22 centerfire, you will loose a wolf. The varibles on pelt damage come from how much velosity and where you hit them. If you hit a coyote or fox in the shoulder or neck you will get more pelt damage. If you have high velosity(22-250) you will have more pelt damage no matter where you hit them. I find that cartriges in the 222 & 223 class and smaller do far less damage than the 22-250's and the 6mm's. Hit in the lungs my 222 puts a tiny little hole in the pelt and no exit. For wolves, I would go no less than 6mm and use a bullet suitable for deer. Daryl

I suppose I should do a little field testing on fixes and cats here, but they are not all that easy to come by. Plenty around, but as thye don't respond to calling, and spotlighting can be difficult due to the high grass in the fields, I think my best be might be hook up a motion senser to my alarm clock by a big bait at the bottom of the house paddock. Still I really do like the idea of the 22PPC for coyotes and bobcats; 52(or lighter)gn match HP BT or ballistic tip behind 27.5gn of BL-C(2) at 3550fps shouldn't exit and really knock them down without blowing much of a hole in them... By the way, did you get my e-mail Dayrl? [ 01-15-2003, 13:25: Message edited by: EXPRESS ]

In the part of TX where I live, we are not really concerned with pelt damage, as there is not a market for them. Last price I was offered was $1.00 and $10.00 for bobcat. The yotes we leave lay, the bobcats I skin and either mount them or make rugs and sell them on ebay. I generally use a 22-250AI at night and a 6.5-06AI during the day when there is a chance of a long range shot across a wheat field. I use a 60 grain vmax in the 22=250 and a 95 grain vmax in the 6.5. What about the 55g BT out of the 6mmPPC? Anyone use those? They also make a 70g BT.

Lucky shot, I think I will try the Nosler ballistic tip 55grner, should do just fine.

I like a 50 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip in a 223 Varmit rifle for both.

I've shot a lot of Coyotes for their fur.Used a .223 with a 60gr. Hornady.Bullet worked great,no more than 2 or 3 stitches.Back in the "good old days" when I averaged $167.00 on my coyotes the furbearers never minded 2 or 3 stitches.

Wolfer: Your post brings back memories to me. The high prices Coyote pelts used to bring! Anyway one year I Hunted Big Game in Montana during the last few days of November. I happened to shoot a large male Coyote that was very light or white colored. As a matter of fact when I returned home to the Seattle, Wahington area and dropped the Coyote off at the taxidermist said without prompting "Man thats a big Montana White"! The ensuing conversation included the estimate that the pelt would bring nearly $200.00 from a fur buyer. Anyway I thought it would look better on my wall tanned. So it was sent off to a tannery - never to be seen again! I often wonder who the thief was that exproprieated my Coyote? Was it someone at the taxidermy, the tannery or a shipper? Who knows? Maybe some "karma" came to them! Thanks I guess for bringing back that memory from 25 - 30 years ago! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
