...but I need some fishing advice! My buddy and I are going PD shooting in Montana (Lewiston area ) in early June. I've been reading up on the area and find that the Judith River and some of its tributaries are supposedly good trout fishing. Not having a fly rod ( nor intending on getting one for this purpose ) I'm interested in learning a bit of lures, spinners, etc. that would work. My tackle box is full of stuff for largemouth and walleye...nothing ( that I know of) that might be suitable for trout. What would make a decent assortment of lures...small Mepps, etc.? Posted here in hopes that some of you guys also wet a line periodically in this type of water.

In shallow water, a close hit with a .22-250'll get 'em floating up where you can just scoop 'em up. "A cheerful heart is good medicine."

I plan on taking my .44 spl with for finishing shots on the PDs.. : maybe it can harvest some trout also. Glad to hear about the Mepps, etc., as I have a good assortment which I use for crappies. Thanks for the help,as there aren't any trout 'round here to practice on.

Light line, very small jigs, 1/16, 1/32 etc. If legal, try prepared fish egg type baits, Power Bait, is a good one. Plain old earth worms are always good. BA Arkansas football will rise again!

Joes flies, they are deadly use a lt weight spinning rod and reel 4lb line is best and you will have to attach a piece of split shot about 10 inches up from the flie. You can find them on a web site called landbigfish.com.We packed in to the mountains last summer about a dozen of us and caught twice as many fish as the rest of the crew put together.w/regards

Thanks, all. I'm off to the store this weekend to get some of the aforementioned goodies. Almost as pumped about the fishing as the shooting.

The gopher shooter's technique is good but I would go there find out what's hatching and get your flies up there. Water filled bubbles and plain clear plastic bubbles instead of split shot are other proven successfull techniques. Small Super duppers, & small frog colored dardevils have always been producers. Bartchse:I dont think you read his post very well,he does not want to fly fish,I live in the same drainages he wants to fish and I live less than a 100 yd,s from the same rivers I can catch my supper out of this water on any night.I think my advise might be more valid than yours.w/regards

A little derris (rotenone) in the water upstream will get you a bunch really easy, completely non-toxic to humans and 100% effective. Parallax makes it too damn difficult to take them with a varmint rifle, and the game wardens don't take too kindly to it either (not that they take very kindly to the rotenone either, but at least it doesn't make any noise that might otherwise attract them). ..And why the sea is boiling hot And whether pigs have wings. -Lewis Carroll

Good advice on shooting to the contrary, I think I'll stick to using lures and worms and avoid a potential debate on penetration vs. expansion.

But officer, I didn't see anything in the fishing regulations prohibiting the use of gill nets and dynamite. RELOAD - ITS FUN!
