6BR 105 Varmint bullets?

Anybody recommend a 105 grain bullet that will perform well on varmints at long ranges. 500+

I've got a 6BR fast twist and want to hunt some groundhogs this summer with it. It shoots Berger 105's and Hornady A-Max's at 2840fps very well, but I have a feeling match bullets will just poke holes in 'em.

I've seen 105 Starke Varmint bullets advertised, anyone tried these?

TIA,

mark

Actually, the 105 A-Max is a very frangible bullet, suitable for chucks. One of the varminter's boards ran tests on it and other heavy 6mm bullets a short time ago. I apologize that I can't remember which site.

The A-Max was the only one that consistantly achieved the desired result (Cliff Notes version [Big Grin] )

Mark,

I cannot comment on any varmint bullets in the 6br. By the time a matchking has traveled 600yards or more it is going slow enough to expand very nicely. My girlfriend has a 6br F-class rifle and it shoots great at 1000 yards.

I took it to Blackwater range in NC and shot a 1 gallon orange juice jug at 1200 yards. The come up from a 100 yard zero was 43 min and I had 8 3/4 min of windage on. It was blowing pretty good that day.

Just to compare the 6br to my 6.5x284 shooting 142gr mk. The come up from 100 yards was 39min and windage was 6min.

I am able to get 2850fps out of the 6br and 107gr Sierra Mk with little problem. The barrel is 30" long and a 8 twist. The load is 31.5gr of varget.

Corbin,

Thanks for the reply. I got to shoot this rifle at 600 and 1000 for the first time at Butner last fall and had a blast! I shot F-Class and was amazed at what the little BR can do.
I think I'm going to shoot the A-Max's at the 'chucks if I can get 'em to hold still long enough!
I'm going to try to get back down to Butner in March and I hope to see you there! [Smile]

Mark, I am going to do the same with my 6 BR. I have decided to go with the Starke 95 gr Varmint bullet. I don't think that the velocities of the 105 or 107 gr bullets will be high enough for expansion at longer ranges. I have recovered Sierra match bullets shot from my 6 BR at 1000 yds. No expansion at all. Just hole pokers. If you do decide to stay with the heavier bullets, I would suggest using the Hornady 105gr A-Max.

Rich,

Thanks, I had forgotten all about the 95's. [Roll Eyes]
I'm not sure, but I think Berger may even have a 95 grain MEF bullet. I'll have to give them both a try.
What kind of velocity gains are we talking about?
