Hey I just got a Remington 40-X in 243, with a heavy barrel. I need a scope for it but I have a budget of no more then $250. I want something just for groundhogs. I won't carry it in the woods for the fact that it has no safety and a hair trigger. I really don't know much about scopes so any info will be great. Thanks Dae
For rifles like that I have the now old fashioned target scopes that use dovetail scope blocks. Scopes such as the Lyman Super Targetspots and Unertl's, Feckers etc. are quite satisfactory. The thing is finding one at a fair price. The dealers at gun shows and collectors seem to price them like gold.
The thing is that a .243 in a rifle like that has really long range potential. A target scope in 15X would be really nice.
As to a conventional scope I really don't have a $250 suggestion. The Leu 6X18 costs $400. Leupolds VX1 4X12 would do it if 12X is ok for you but I don't think the VX1 line has click adjustments.
I kind of think you'd find the Bushnell Elite 3200 line much to your liking. Optically as good as the new VX-II line from Leupold, tough, and cheap. Other good scopes might be the Weavers, especially the Grand Slams, and the already mentioned VX-1 Leupolds. The thing about cheap scopes, particularly the cheap varaibles, would be lack of image clarity at magnifications above 12-15X. You need to check this before you buy one.

Thanks for the info guys, When I get a scope I will post what brand. Oh and one more question, Does anyone know anything about BSA Scopes? A fellow at the local gun store was saying that there good and prices cheap.
My next varmint scope is going to be the Weaver V24, Brunos Shooter Supply and Natchez Shooters Supply both had them for about $250. The V16 was a little cheaper.
Bruno's just raised the price of the V24 to $311, the V16 is $266

I have a BSA 4x16x50 on one of my .22's, but I would not use it on any of my other rifles. The clearity is not real good, but it does hold it's zero and does well for what I use it for. I like my B&L 4200's that I have on my 22-250 and my 257 Wby. They a great scopes and they do not cost an arm & a leg like some of the highend scopes.

I'll second the Weaver V24 or V16 suggestion. Excellent scopes for the money, very repeatable. Usual street price for the V16 is around $275, though if you look around a bit on eBay, Auction Arms, or GunBroker.com, you might find a warranty repair for a smidge over $200 (mine was returned because someone didn't like something about it, so the store couldn't sell it again retail as 'new', so they sold it on eBay. Not a thing wrong w/ it.) to $225.
Sightron's work, but I'm not entirely enthused about the '1/8"' clicks. A) they aren't 1/8" (I'm told that's common w/ a lot of brands) and B) I don't think they are necessary for most shooting outside of formal BenchRest. Most people don't have their zeroes nailed down that tight anyway, from what I've seen.
In all honesty, you might want to just save up for abit, and get a better scope (Weaver at a minimum, then a Sightron, then start looking at Burris Signature series, or perhaps used Leupold Vari-X II and III 6-18x or 6.5-20x 1" tubes). It's kind of a 'cry once' type of thing. $250 is pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel to put on a gun that costs as much as a 40X.
Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV)

Daethorn: I have a Remington 40XB in 243 Winchester myself. I really enjoy the rig! I have a Leupold 6.5X20 on it and at times wish I had more power! I would hold a fire sale or a garage sale and sell something and get as much power on that rig as you can buy! I shoot mostly Colony Varmints (Prairie Dogs, Rock Chucks and Ground Squirrels on occassion) with my 40X but it has killed a lot of Coyotes as well as Badger and other Vermin. Neat rig you have there! Mine also is the single shot model with 2 ounce trigger and no safety! Use extreme caution til you get used to that! Good luck with it! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Varmit Yeah I love mine also, I will have to wait till spring to have a yard sale , but I am currently saveing as much as the wife will alow. The gun had a lyman scope on it but my uncle said no way was he giveing it up. There are a few things I wanna do to my gun, like a little different stock, the one it has is to plain. I will post a pic if I ever get my scanner to work.
A Japanese made Tasco in 6-24 or 8-32 would work. Get a World Class or TR grade scope. I use these scopes. Also I use a Burris 8-32 Signature and some Weavet T series scopes but they are Fixed Power. The 6-24 Bushnell 4200's are good also as Ihave two of them but bang for the buck I would go with the TAsco's. The Tasco Custom Shop scope have been reported to out group a Niteforce and they are made by Hakko in8-40 power. Not as cear but suitable for hogs. Also you may want to consider a Farrel 20 Moa Base because scopes in your price range dont have a lot of adjustment and you will run out of elevation.

If you do not put a quality scope on it to begin with, you will buy one twice. Save your $ and get something good to start. Check the classifieds on this site, 24 hour campfire and Hunt America. Some good deals show up regularly.
