I have heard Varmint Guy use this term and also a few other guys from Washington state use this term....

I know it is describing prairie dog towns and sage rat fields....

So I have to ask....

For Shooting " Colony Varmints" do you refer to that as going out and shooting the "Colonials??"

And do you buy a Special Rifle for it... so can a Varmint Rifle also be referred to as a "Colonial Gun"?

I am sure this would fire up the Brits who are still thinking the USA is a Colony of Britain...

Half the Canucks still look at the USA as a bunch of Colonials...

We gotta watch our words around some of this British and Canadian forum members....

See what can cross your mind with time on your hands... lol

Seafire

I use heavy barreled Varmint rifles for Colony Varmints. Custom 10-22 Ruger with a heavy Kimber barrel with tight chamber and a burris 4 X 12 compact. Remington VSSF in the .223 with a 6.5 X 20 Vari-X III or a Savage FV12 with a Burris Signature 6 X 24. Winchester Heavy Varmint in 22-250 with a 6.5 X 20 Vari-X III. 6MM Remington Winchester Varmint contour barrel with a Nightforce 8 x 32 scope. All have heavy barrels. The center fire rifles all have an 8 to 12 oz. trigger pull except 22-250. Yes we do refer to it as shooting the colonies.

Very similar to 1812 just another kind of Varmint. As far as I'm concerned you don't have to watch your words around any socialist. They can live with the facts or hide the heads in denial. As for the Canucks still looking at the USA as a bunch of Colonials... Who still bows to the Queen Mother?

John,

I think Turd Boy would fit nicely in the rodent class of varmints.

Seafire/B17G: Yes there is such a thing as "dedicated" Colony Varmint Rifles!
I have several of them!
They literally can only do one thing (Varminting wise) - and that is, be used to shoot Colony Varmints!
NOT Canadians or British or like that.
Let me just give you a couple of examples of my "dedicated Colony Varmint Rifles"!
One of my favorite Colony Varmint Rifles is a factory stock Remington 40XBBR-KS in caliber 22 Remington Bench Rest!
This VERY heavy barrelled semi BR Rifle has a 2 ounce trigger with NO SAFETY and it also features a very wide forearm on the stock! This Rifle makes no pretense of subtlety! It is flashy and shiney! Bright green stock and a highly polished stainless barrel! It is nearly impossible to shoot comfortably "offhand"!
It does its best work off of my bench rest or wide sandbags at Colony Varmints!
It is also a single shot Rifle.
It is scoped with a bright silver Leupold 36 power (straight 36 power!) BR type target scope! The plain crosshairs are infinitely fine!
According to the Leupold catalog they cover ONLY .03" of my intended target at 100 yards! The scope would be about useless for MANY or ANY other types of Varmint Hunting and out of the question for night spotting or close range quick shooting!
This "dedicated" Colony Varmint Rifle is VERY DEADLY on Rock Chucks, Ground Squirrels and Prairie Dogs!
I love this Rifle!
I chose it and its components and crafted my VERY accurate handloads for one thing and one thing only - Hunting Colony Varmints!
I didn't invent the term Colony Varmints or Colony Varmint Rifles but I was an advocate and into them very "early on"!
Another of my Colony Varmint Rifles is a Sako bolt action (all factory stock) single shot heavy barrel Rifle in caliber 6mm PPC!
This Rifle is so wonderfully accurate I don't even consider shooting Varmints with it until they are beyond 200 yards from my muzzle!
Another of my favorite Colony Varmint Rifles is similar (exact duplicate) of the above Remington 40XB-BRKS. But this Rifle is in caliber 6x47. By the way these two Rifles weigh 12 pounds 8 ounces with their scopes and mounting systems.
No sling swivel studs (no bipods then!) and wide forearms with target quality triggers are just a couple of the attributes that define Colony Varmint Rifles!
Not so much with calibers though, defining a Colony Varmint Rifle!
As an example, I have another Remington factory 40XB-BR Rifle in caliber 22 Remington Bench Rest that I use for all manner and styles of Varmint Hunting! It has a safety and I mounted a variable power 6.5x20 Leupold scope on it! This 40X model has a stock that is much more usable for other types of Varminting. It is wood and has a wide but rounded and easily gripped forearm!
So in short yes there are Rifles that are "dedicated" to Colony Varmint Hunting.
And yes other types of Varmint Rifles WILL suffice to Hunt Colony Varmints but the "dedicated" Colony Varmint Rifles will provide higher "scores" in Colony Varminting situations AND thus be more fun to use (own!).
Long live Colony Varmint Rifles!
By the way Seafire/B17G "guys" from Washington are correctly called "Washingtonians"!
Kind of like the correct term for folks from Oregon be known as OreCalifornicators"!
More later - phone call!
Hold into the wind
VarmintGuy
