Posted this on the small bore forum but thought it would be of interest here. I was deer hunting and just before dark I caught something moving across the field and instantly recognizes as a bobcat. I quickly threw up my 257R and squeezed off a round. This was the first time I didn't see ground shrinkage on an animal. The bobcat probably weighed between 25-30lbs. Shockingly, it was a female. The taxidermist said he's never seen a female so big and has only see a few males that size. Needless to say, I was very pleased.

Nice kitty.
What are you having done, a full body mount?

Be careful, you may get the varmint hunting bug.

One thing about varmint hunting. You can do it year round.

Good on ya'.

Thanks GW. I'm going to do a full body mount and place her on top of my gun safe.

Not to hijack your thread, but from my years spent there, east Texas has tons of crows. I've found that you can take a "quiver" rabbit and place a electronic caller with a rabbit call, play it. The crows go nuts. Get a couple guys with shotguns and you can have a ball. Or just snipe 'em when they land in trees. I'd bet you have fox there, and coyote also.

There are plenty of Coyotes. Hear them all the time and trail cams pick them up. I hear what you are saying about crows, I was thinking the same thing watching them from the blind. Once the season is over, I need to snipe them from the blind with my 223.

I have a quiver rabbit and planed on doing some predator hunting once deer season was over. I just lucked in to this bobcat and couldn't resist.

I find that if one sets in an elevated blind (like a box blind) or on the side of a hill and places the call and decoy out 30 to 50 yds, witth the wind blowing left to right or vice versa, coyotes don't bust you quite as easy. Their attention is more drawn toward the decoy. If you are above them they don't wind you as easy.
Be sure and post some pix of your coyotes this spring.

You just described the exact set up of one of my blinds. Box blind, slightly elevated and on a hill overlooking a 2 acre field surrounded by woods. I was on this blind when I caught the bobcat sneaking across the field.

I'll follow your advice once deer season is over.

When are you going back to your "place"?
Varminting, hog hunting or for deer?

I'm going back Monday to at least hunt the morning (deer). I have to pick up my deer from the processor in town.

I start a new job on the 27th, and have to spend 3-6 months in Pittsburgh, PA so this will pretty much be it for the season.

I probably won't get a chance to hunt predators or hogs until Spring.
