After hearing from my wife "you bought another gun?" for the second time this year, I'm having a hard time trying to justify (to her) contuning purchases. The usual response of "this one is specifically for 'XXX', which is why I can't use any of the others", is beginning to fall on deaf ears.
Can one really own too many guns? [Confused]
I only have 13!

223 - 2
22-250 - 2
25-06 - 1
270 - 1
.22 - 3
12ga - 1
16ga - 1
20ga - 1
9mm - 1

New excuses greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I think you are overdue for some version of a .308.

When the subject comes up, conveniently ask her the cost of her haircuts compared to yours. Makeup is another biggie. These usually cause arguements in my house though. The one I would highly recommend is "Hey, it keeps me out of the bars and strip clubs."

The big bores are really hard to justify with her. She is quite gun savy and knows the biggest thing to shoot around my parts are those 115lb Hill Country whitetails! I'll keep trying though.

Bought smartly, guns are one of the few consumer goods that not only hold their value but also can appreciate significantly. My rifle and pistol portfolio has done much better over the past 4 years compared to the $$$$ I've poored into my company's stock purchase program. One needs balance in one's investment and hell, guns are a whole lot more fun than bonds and can return more.

You don't have too many guns. I'm not sure you need more than one .22-250, especially since you've got a few .223s. But look at what you're lacking. You've got nothing in .30 cal. That is the most versatile of all calibers.

Must adds:
A .308 Win and a 300 Win
A 6mm of some sort (sell one of the .22-250s and get a .243 or a 6 Remington).
A .38/.357
A .44 Magnum revolver
A .22 Auto pistol
And, no .45 ACP? What ARE you thinking?

Just get em. You'll figure out the excuses later.

Why don't you just buy her a .308 for her birthday? It worked for me, except it was a 45ACP that I bought for my wife. Now I just say that I bought US another gun.

You do not have enough if she is able to tell the difference. The goal is to work to the point where it is verrry difficult to determine if one has been added. It helps to rotate them in the safe too. Put the new ones in the back. Then if the question comes up later about a new gun, you can answer in all honesty that you have had it for sometime and it is not new at all. But the wisest thing is probably to get it and lie the tar baby, "Don't say nothing." [Smile]

MDH1053-- I'm concerned over a serious lack of small and sub-caliber weaponry in your inventory. No Hornets, no K Hornets, no .17's not even a HMR? Whats up with that? We're talkin "CUTE" little cartriges here! I also like the "Look what I bought for YOU dear" approach, but not with a .308, it's far to big, she'll never buy it. You need a diminutive endearing little round for this approach " Look isn't it DARLING? I felt so selfish buying all those guns for myself, this little cutie is ALL YOURS! " If all this advise doesn't work I've got the number of a good lawyer, cause your gonna need it.---Shoot Safe---montdoug

If all of those guns are best for hunting besides the 9mm consider some form of target shooting. There is silouette, position, bench rest, long range, rapid fire, cowboy, running deer, schuetzen and .22 gallery. If I have missed any that's ok as first you need a gun for each of those.

Someone mentioned a .22 RF pistol. Those are the most fun of any handgun for me.

If she's not cleaning the guns then she shouldn't know how many you have. I agree that if she can still how many you have, you don't have enough. When talking on the phone to your buddies try to be just vague enough so that he knows which gun you're talking about but she doesn't. When adding a gun to your collection leave the house with an empty gun case and return with a full one. Finally, if she works, bring the gun home and lock it in the safe while she is at work, it cuts way down on unnecessary conversation. Unnecessary conversation is any conversation that starts with the words,"but honey, you don't understand." Hope this helps. [Wink]

I can't believe you don't have a varmint weight 243 or a duel purpose caliber such as a 257 AI.

Actually I'm a very lucky fellow in the fact that my wife really doesn't care how many guns I buy or how much they cost. Last year I needed a Parker 16ga SKT/SKT for early season Grouse and Pheasant, An LC Smith 20ga 2bbl set once again for grouse and Pheasant, Rizinni 3 bbl set because it was much nicer that the Winchester set I had currently. A pre 64 M70 FWT once again it was nicer than the one I had another FWT in 358 for Deer in the Upper Penisula because I missed the one I had sold for something else and the list goes on and on. She wants a new bathroom so she will get it. As long as I keep up with the bills and the things needed around the house I'm OK.

What? No 7mm's? I solved some of the problems by getting my wife to shoot with me. She's good about me buying guns though. I work part time at a gunshop and can't remember the last time I brought home a check!
But I sure have some nice guns!

Just some words of wisdom I have received over the years while buying Fly Rods, Reels, and Guns.

1) It is easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

2) You simply need to find a way to buy 2 or 3 more guns. When you hit about 16, those 8 or how many guns you have turn in to "all of those guns" and they can no longer keep track anymore.

Good Luck!!

Well, I did this one last year, bought three rifles at once, but one was an 06 with a muzzle break "for the fiancee". I went to so much trouble of having it fit for her, scope, loading etc. that she disregarded the others.

She actually understands my "needs" and therefor I have a monthly amount I get to spend on whatever I want, if I choose to save it and roll it over a couple of months I can get a rifle with the money.

2 x 22lr
1 x 22mag
1 x 264winmag
1 x 270win
1 x 270Apex (7mm rem, necked down)
1 x 7mm Rem
1 x 30-06.AI
1 x 308Norma
1 x 35whelen AI
1 x 45-70 Ruger No. 3
1 x .458winmag being blued right now
22 pistol
38 special
9mm
45acp
357mag
25cal pistol

That's all for now. But I am constantly trying to get more. As you can all see, I am seriously lacking in the lower calibers. Here are the gab fillers that I NEED.

-223
-224 Clark
-6mm of some sort
-.257 Roberts
-416 Taylor

I also need to get a couple shotguns.

Is there something about this time of year and this topic? I see it has come up about 6 times (at least that I've seen or heard) and twice today!

Aside from making a better choice the second time around (which I'm not suggesting you do [Roll Eyes] ) being aware of and tactfully noticing out loud that there are some things that balance the personal expense list helps. In fact, the idea that they can't recognize the difference between but so many guns seems to have some validity. Even my sharp eyed kids lost count after the first 10 or so and they were actually shooting them! I've got guns from before I was married, inherited, bought since marriage, etc. and without training, it is hard to keep up with it all.

Another thing that helps this confusion is to be a "good buddy" and "repair" or "clean" the odd gun for your buddies who "don't know what they've got". After the parade in and out, she doesn't know what is yours and what is theirs! [Big Grin]

Now, also remember to not put too fine a point on her personal expenses... [Big Grin]

One thing that isn't mentioned is that women seem to be much more tolerant of raging obsessions (that don't include OTHER women) than they are of reasoned investments which might be deemed excessive. They seem to love to be able to shake their heads and say to their friends, "I don't think he'll ever get over this. Good thing he's got me." [Roll Eyes]

rbhunt,

You know, there might be a couple of solutions. First, if you have a small closet that you don't need for something else, it is a good "project" to convert into a large safe. Tell her you are doing it so that it can be less conspicuous, you're going to put a nice blanket over that part of the wall or something.

Second, and easiest, is to let a "buddy" keep his safe at your place :-)

I have come up with the best way. I will need another one probably before the end of the year. I already have 4 safes though, 1 antique and 2 for jewelry, documents coins etc. So I "collect" safes. :-)

You are being seriously abused.

Last count here showed 13 "Varmint" guns not to mention Target, Medium Bores, Large bores, Muzzleloaders, Defense Guns, Shotguns, Dual Purpose ones..... And we all know how they "BREED" when left unsupervised in the safe for too long. I left a Browning and a Model 70 next to each other once for a month or so, next time I looked carefully, low and behold the Gun Stork had made a visit and there were 2 new Ruger #1's nestled quietly between them.

Just remember if ya can't dazzle them with Brilliance , BAFFLE them with BULLS**T

My wife doesn't have a clue as to how many firearms I own (17 at last count). It's none of her business. They're in a gun cabinet built into a wall. In 15 years she's rarely come into my gun room. It has a lock on the door, and I think she took the hint. When we purchased our house I told her to pick a room. It's hers. I put a lock on the door, gave her the keys and have never failed to knock instead of opening the door. Then I built the same thing for myself. Don't even talk guns to them. No good will come of it. If she shows an interest in learning to target shoot or hunt that's different, but otherwise, no way in hell. Best wishes.
