I have just heard that they have a new game law in the Yukon.
At one time we could shoot ground squirrels or gophers all we wanted to.
The new law now states that we cannot shoot gophers unless we eat them.
This law was put in place because the Indians felt that it is disrespectful to shoot the gophers unless we eat them and traditionally they ate the gophers. The indians feel that because, traditionally they ate gophers that so should we.

Funny thing is, most of the Indians here are eating at KFC.

I am interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Don't hold back.

M.Mule, [Big Grin]

I nearly pissed myself!

When I get a permit and shoot a bunch of gophers, I am going to take them to the game branch and tell them exactly that.

If we are going back to tradition, lets go all the way. The natives should only use bow and arrow, and live in tepees. This sounds more like it came from PETA, not the natives. I do not know the gopher population there, but we have to shoot them to keep them from taking over. In Saskatchewan they even organized a gopher shoot, with major prizes.

Yukoner;
Glad you saw the humor in that! [Wink]
I didn't have an intelligent answer for you so I thought I'd add a little levity! [Big Grin]

Yukoner,

I zapped a couple in the mountains by Spencer Creek last summer. Not much left to eat. I imagine MANY will get back down their holes before I can retrieve them!

I recall the regs stating that the gophers kept them from starving to death in tough times. They now have the dumpster behind Boston Pizza.

Yukoner,

Why have you not heard of the new law before? It seems to me that you would have opposed this law before it was voted on as it restricts your hunting rights?

Do you have an NRA there? Do you belong to it?

Ah Spring, when bunny-huggers dream up one idiotic ruse after another to stop the seasonal culling of pasture carp. Every year it's something new, ain't it?

Damned if every gopher I shoot doesn't make it back down his hole, even if he needs a little boot-and-stick help! I'd say that years of culling the gopher herd has made them a heartier lot and darn few will be recovered for the Indians' campfires under this new law.

I can hardly wait for next year.

Yukoner: just as an aside, what are the territorial fine and court costs now for using the word "squaw" out loud, in a public place?

Wonder if the old saying holds true for gophers...shoot one and six more show up for the funeral!!! Have fun shooting them!!! Who is looking for them? Do ya'll have that many Game Wardens or nosy indians to keep check on every shot fired? I'd love a few days in a gopher field!!!!!! GHD
