Had created quite a long msg and the #&%^ computer ate it, so I will just say make a sight decoy out of foam, paint it with a paint that won't disolve the plastic and set it out in the "open" far enough from you to make the sight attractant more important than the call sounds when yote gets in range. Local company was making them in the shape of a fawn, but they had done tests(video was hilarious) with various stuffed animals from the store. Movement made it more effective as I remember it. Calls included fawn bleat (also attracted deer), rabbit and home made call with a sound unique to their use. LouisB If you can handle a diaphram call you may want to play with an elk call, sure can make a variety of sounds with some practice with one of them! Just takes a little gagging and coughing to get it all down

Simple and expedient one. Save some fur from any of the creatures you kill, rabbit, deer, tree rat, etc. Cut a piece about 6"x6" and suspend it above your speaker, if using a e-caller. If using a hand caller hang it from a low branch several yards away from you, high enough off the ground so that it will sway in the breeze but not to high, about 3 ft should suffice. Also save the urine from any of the creatures that you kill and use a "little" on the fur.

You can take in one step furter. If you do shoot a Rabbit, Rat or any other "pray" to use as a decoy for your calling, make sure that you wear plastic gloves when handling the pray. Ensure that you do not leave any human scent on the decoy or in the area you are setting the decoy up. I have found that pray that I have touched or handled was left alone for weeks to dry, even with Jackal in the area. Wilhelm Greeff www.zingelani.co.za

I like those weasel tail things being sold at the mall toy shops. If the ball part is brightly colored, paint it or cover it in fur glued onto it. The flopping around also focuses the predator's attention on the decoy and not on you. Put it out 25 to 50 yards away from you.

I have used both fawn and rabbit yard decorations from Wal-mart and Beany Baby puppy and kitten plush toys. We have a dog and a cat so the toys go to bed with them. And I purchased some rabbit scent from a beagle training website that they sold to use on a drag. Deer scents are everywhere. Use rubber gloves when handling and keep them in ziplocks or fresh taped trash bags for transport. I rigged a remote control "shaker" for the Beany babies and use a wireless remote speaker placed close by. Yelp or whine til you see him and then shake the puppy or kitty and get ready. Fawn or rabbit works very well in spring. Puppy and kitten year round.

I've never tried with coyotes but Wifezilla can decoy crows. She likes to dress the house up for Halloween and last year she bought a couple of fake crows and set them on the porch roof. An hour later our neighbor called asking what the hell was going on at our house. When Wifezilla went out front to check, there were over 30 crows on the neighbor's roofs screaming at the two stuffed crows that she had put up. They wouldn't stop screaming until she got the ladder out and took the stuffed ones into the house. The crows stayed in the neighborhood for the rest of the afternoon watching our house, it looked like something out of Alfred Hitchcock's movie "The Birds".

I found that a decoy/remote caller combination works the best for calling in predators like Jackal and I believe that is should work equally well for the Cayote. Place your remote speaker and the decoy about 80 yards up-wind from you. Position yourself about 45 degrees off the direction of the wind. Remember that the area must be open and not allow the predator to hide behind any bushes or scrubs. Members of the canidae family hunts mainly by using their ability to smell their prey. The predator wil hear the rabbit in distress and move in on the sound to about 80 yards from the decoy. It should then keep a safe distance of about 80 yards from the prey and move in a circle to approach the prey upwind enabling the predator to smell the prey. If the predator sees the decoy and hear the distress calls, it usually looses some causion and moves in for the kill. At this point the predator should pass very close to you focussing on the decoy (prey) allowing you a good shot. Please try this and give me feedback on your success on the cayote. I have taken a rabbit hand puppet and one of the weasel balls, minus the tail, and put it in the puppet. It has just enough movement to attract the attention to it. That is if there is no ground cover. My rabbit puppet it black and white and they don't mind it. John

I made a remote shaker with a weighted eccentric wheel like the ones in a case tumbler except used a much slower motor and a receiver and servo actuator from a radio controlled airplane. Turn it on and off remotely. [ 11-01-2003, 06:27: Message edited by: Old & Slow ]
