I have ;heard that if you intend to stay in town, you need to have a .45 under your pillow at night. Don't stay there! Jim Kobe 10841 Oxborough Ave So Bloomington MN 55437 952.884.6031 Professional member American Custom Gunmakers Guild

The Cheyenne River Motel in Eagle Butte is a decent place to stay. Phone number is 605-964-8888. It's an old Super 8, and it's still that type of place. The motel is run by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. The people that run it are very friendly and I've never had a lick of a problem with anything about Eagle Butte or the Cheyenne River Reservation. Matter of fact, the reservation has a reputation for being the best run and organized in South Dakota. Just my opinion. Jim Kobe--have you had a bad experience there? I'm not disputing your information, but I stay there occasionally and maybe you have more recent information that I'd like to know about? Sincerely Shotgun

They are/were experiencing some gang problems, I just would not go walking the streets and keep all equipment with you in the room and they might have the problem under control.

We've been getting some press in the Sioux Falls paper concerning gangs up in the Standing Rock Reservation and especially McLaughlin, but nothing about gang activity in the Cheyenne River reservation. Your advice is good, though Duane. Shotgun

#1)To find, you can put the "town name" into "whitepages.com" or "switchboard.com" business listing section or others no doubt and get a list of all the businesses in that town. Usually not a huge number so you get 2 or 3 addresses and phone ###'s for hotel/motel. #2). Yes, there is a drugs and alcohol problem on the reservations. Oh surprise. Pine Ridge is dry, but White Clay, NE, across the border sells millions of cans of beer a year. Sad but true. I don't understand why the Rez doesn't have liquor stores and use the profits for their problems... And to be fair, if you visit Senic or the other small town just outside the Rez in SD, the grocery store is 98% booze or so... I stopped for some fruit while I was driving and they had a cooler near the cash register. Maybe a bushel of different fruits, lunch meat. The rest of the building was bottles. No, no dish soap. If you hit the Indian papers like Lakota Times or Rapid city, you can read of the occassional drug bust... By all means, keep your gear in the room, no matter how heavy... Don't go wandering around an night. And if you are up before dawn, beware of the intoxicated... Keep a handgun to protect the long guns... Sad, but not that much different than big city. Luck. Happy Trails. I thought there was a place in Eagle Butte called Carlas, trailers for rooms to stay and references to land owners with dog towns to "thin out." ??? Never got there myself. Relatives in the Buffalo Gap area, SW corner of SD.
