My wife is asking me about Christmas ideas and I thought some different predator calls might be good. I already use jackrabbit and cottontail distress calls and kiss the back of my hand for a low volume squeal. I hunt mountain woods on down to open prairie in Colorado and any predator that comes to dinner is fair game. A fellow hunter mentioned the fawn distress and woodpecker distress. What is your favorite for Rocky Mtn predators, why, and where can I find them?

Hi Deke,

I find the fawn in distress call works better in the mountains, than on the plains. I use a Kmeer Deer hand call, but it is easy to get winded using this call. Sceery has one that appears to use less air volume, but I have not used it. A side benefit to the fawn distress call is the deer that come to it. The doe's look like they want to stomp something, and occasionally they have a buck tagging along.

Hey Fred,

I like the Sceery calls and will look into it. How did your big game hunting go this year and have you been predator hunting?

Big game hunting was very good this year. I had a muzzle tag and passed on the only bull I saw. Passed on all the muley bucks I saw, nothing I wanted to shoot.
I have been out 3 times for coyotes, solo twice and got 2 each time, once with my son and his friend, they missed 2. I've been working to much this year!
How is/was your seasons? Did you get after lions last year?

Hunted a new area for Elk this year. Saw plenty, but had decided to let others shoot first and did not get a good opportunity after that. Saw muley's, but did not get a shot at a buck. In both cases I did not hunt enough, but was encouraged for next year. Work prevented me from pronghorn hunting. No lion hunting last year, but I continue to see alot of tracks and may get a tag this year, but work may limit that as well. Want to go after the coyotes at the first of the year. Planning on letting my 8yr old set up with the 22LR at 50yrds or less so he is pretty excited and hopefully we will get some in at that range.
