Hi guys can anyone tell me where to go to shoot jackrabbits and praire dogs in this area?

I took a job at one of the mines down there
and will be looking for some varmits to practice on.
I have missed the red mist since I left Wyoming 15 years ago.

Thanks again
Don

I was shooting Jackrabbits between Jackpot and Elko last year. I was using a .308, .223, .44 mag, and a 6mm. I was actually lion hunting but had some time to shoot rabbits. They group up into large densities in the winter. I must have seen 200 to 300 in some areas, it gets boring shooting them after awhile. You have to make rules, such as "only shooting them on the run" and they have to be at least 100 yards for offhand shots. We had a good time. I was shooting them off the roads that lead to Cottonwood Ranch. You can probably do a google search for the road.

Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

CoolThere's a 54 yr. old gal there named Mickey that knows all about varmint activities. Use to be married (kinda) to a local Native American. Ask for her at Keith's Truck Stop ( Wineemucca I believe); that is if it is still there. Red FaceRoger

Go down to the gunshop on Idaho Street and ask them. I'm sure they can hook you up with someone who knows. Or go out to the public range and ask around. There have to be jacks in them hills somewhere...

In the Reno/Sparks and Carson City areas we have a freebie newspaper called the Big Nickel. People place ads in it to buy and sell things, et cetera. If Elko has such a thing, you might try placing a small ad asking where to shoot such vermin, leaving just your email address for a contact. Of course, those who know where these fuzzy targets hang out might be reluctant to pass on the information.

cal30 1906, I have a few friends that work in the mines in Elko. I am from Wallace Idaho but relocated to Columbus, Mt. about 15 years ago. One of my buddies that lives in Elko is a avid hunter and I am sure he could hook you up. He is working for Barrick now.

No prairie dogs in NV, just jack rabbits. Lots of badgers North of Wells on the ranches. Just bring some Tequila along because all the ranch hands out there are Mexicans. No kidding, great people. There are also lots of rock chucks around Jarbridge. Great coyote hunting, too.

30 years ago I had a study partner, USN ensign Wiggins, from Elko, who told me that the town was mostly Basque sheep herders.

It is probably all cab drivers from India by now.
