VarmintGuy very much intended as a compliment!!
I am being educated with this exchange. I am begining to see some of the errors of my ways. I shamefully admit to having VICES. I truely enjoy scuba diving, and I won't dive in water colder than 78 deg. F at 100 ft depth. This of cource means I must travel. Ohio has very few bodies of water as deep as 100 ft. and those that are, are COLD and you can only see the lens of your mask. That is no fun.
Golf.... gave that one up one year and never looked back.
Also I now consider a golf course as the misuse of a good rifle range.
Now I have renewed goals. Who knows I may catch up some day. OK I was day dreaming a bit there.
More power to more powder.

VG - you still need a 17 ackley bee, a couple of K hornets, a 22/250 AI maybe a 56.x50Rmag then a 6mm/250AI would be nice - especially in a fast twist - I can even think up some more given another day or 2 dancing

Butchbloc: I have only owned ONE of the calibers you mentioned and I never shot that one!
It was a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 22 K-Hornet. The previous owner had "K'ed" out the original 22 Hornet Model 70 and then lost interest. I bought the Rifle for profit motives and never did fire it.
I wish I had!
Now I have had something to do with the 22-250 A.I. and that is a FINE cartridge.
The 5.6x50Rmag sounds interesting but I am still wheeling and dealing on a Rifle from an estate out on the west coast - that IS my next objective for shore!

Muck: Great point on the Golf Courses being better used as Gun Ranges!
Amen to that!

458Lottfan: Best of luck making the 2,008 date for your Safari!
I know you will make it!
I hear there are lots of Varmints in Africa as well as Big Game!

I wasn't going to post on this one because I've used about every firearm I own for Varmint hunting. I tend to sight in a rifle and then go try it out on to see if I'm MOP-Dog. I figure if in get consistent kills then it is good enough for big game. My most used varmint guns are:

1. 22lr in Win model 06&72, Marlin model 60, and 10/22 Ruger.

2. 22WMR Savage 93 & Marlin 25MN

3. 223 in H&R Ultra Varmint, DPMS M4 Carbine

4. 243 Parker Hale 1200

5. 270 Parker Hale 1200 & Remington 700 ADL

Other calibers I have used on varmints are, 303 British, 30-30, 30-06, 35 Rem, 280 Rem, 8mm-06, 338-06, & 35 Whelen. Probably the most fun I've ever had testing my accuracy of my firearms on p-dogs was the day I used my .50 cal muzzle loader. I was taking the little guys around 50-70 yards with ball and patch, it was a total blast.

My question of you is how does your Ruger 77/22VBZ shoot?
What kinds of groups does it make at say 25 yards or 50 or 100 for that matter?
I am so happy with the accuracy of my Ruger 77/17 V/T (77/17VBZ?) that I have been contemplating getting one like yours in the 22 LR?
By the way if you can remember how did it shoot BEFORE your modifications?
Thanks for any info.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. My Ruger K77/22VBZ .22 LR is actually the 4th or 5th one I have had over the years. Basically with all the other ones all I ever had to do to them was Free Float the Barrel and Tune the Triggers, then once the right ammo was found they simply shot good.

The one I currently have I got used in a trade and it has been the WORST one of the lot. Now mind you it would shoot 5 shot groups at 50 yards of 3/8" to 5/8", but was occasionally plagued with unexplained fliers that would wreck an otherwise good group.

Well since the modifications the 5 shot 50 yard groups are now 3/8" to 1/2" but the fliers are gone. So it did not make it shoot tighter groups but no more unexplained fliers.

On some of these Rugers the Barrel Shank to Action fit is horrible. In fact I have had to shim a couple and it seemed to really help. The first one I ever did was horrible, and on that one I not only shimmed the barrel to action but I also JB Welded the Barrel into the Action. This particular rifle is still the very best shooter of any of the 77/22's I have had. No the current owner will not sell it back to me either.

My varmint rifle battery consists of one Savage 12BVSS in .22-250. I just punch paper with it so far; the varmints around here are safe.

Currently, .260Rem, .17HMR, and .204 Ruger shown top to bottom here:

I guess the 7mmWSM loaded with a 100 grain SVHP at 3600 might also do, but is perhaps, a little much. Big Grin

a cz 550 chambered in a 460 wby mag loaded with 300 gr hornady hollowpoints intended for a 45-70 at 1400 fps but jacked up to 3300fps in the 460wby. i do have various smaller rifles from .17rem to 25-06 and scoped to match the 22-250 is my personal favorite but the 460 varmit loads do to a coon what a 22-250 dose to a small pdog.
