Went out and also tested some shots with RL 17 in the 22.250... Since data isn't around, I had to use the advertised Burn Rate is "similar" to the 4350's burn rate... Looking up several sources, I decided to try a charge of 40 grains of RL 17, after working up to that and taking a couple of test shots as I worked up... using 55 grain V Maxes, the Ruger Rifle gave me half inch groups or better with this powder, and CCI Large rifle primers in Win Brass... I went out and chronographed some of these loads also this morning with the average velocity being 3750fps for a 3 shot string with a standard deviation of only 5 fps.. this is out of a 22 inch barrel once again... this was not a compressed load in the Winchester cases... brass only needed neck sized to rechamber in the rifle.. primer pocket were still nice and tight, so I can assume that this is within pressure specs.. although I use faster powders in the 22.250, RL 17 definitely has both a place and some usage with excellent results if you are the type that doesn't like to use a lot of different powders.. seafire Life Member: The American Vast Right Wing Conspiracy Jan 20, 2009.. Did some retesting today... a 40 grain charge of Rl 17, and 55 grain V Maxes gave two 5 shot groups that measured 0.27 and 0.30 at 100 meters... MV was right at about 3750 fps... ballistic tips didn't fare that well...but V Maxes did real well... rifle was a Ruger VT...

Well that is very impressive to say the least John. Do you have some other calibers in mind that you may try with this relatively new product? Regards Greg

I'd like to ask a couple quetions if you don't mind. #1 Is this level of accuracy better, worse or average for this particular rifle? #2 How far off the lands are you loading? velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

bought a pound of it basically to do some testing with it on stuff I didn't find load info on... My only motivation was others talking it up so much.... if you have something in mind, drop me a PM... testing stuff is more or less a hobby, and occupies my mind.... since I don't occupy it with TV or booze or drugs like other people do.. I always like to find the answer for "what if?" for myself...

Swampshooter: This rifle is nothing special... It will shoot some loads that are eye popping and then will throw other loads all over the map that are known tack drivers in most other rifles.. It is a Ruger 77 VT, and has a bout 3,000 rounds down the barrel.. as far as 'off the lands', I haven't done that on this particular load..I can give you a cartridge OAL if you need that, but loading up a dummy round and measuring it.. I have several sets of 22.250 dies and I have the seater dies set for a couple of different bullet weights.. this one was not seated deep...it was long seated which I usually do..particularly on this rifle, the round was longer than magazine length... this is one of my few 22.250s that came from the factory like this, so it has a factor magazine spacer in it..and the throat is further out than that in length.. my other 22.250s wore other barrels like 243s etc before, so they have a longer magazine and this round was the length that would go in those chambers.. it will go in the Ruger VT also, not just in the magazine Life Member: The American Vast Right Wing Conspiracy Jan 20, 2009.. Believe it or not, many yeas ago I shot some Reloader7 in one my 250s with unexpectedly good results. Very touchy though when I got near max. loads. Only got about 3750 fps with 52 gr. bullets but as I can best recall would stay under 3/4MOA on a consistant basis. But what was truly surprising the velocities I got with R7 in the 22 PPC. A shade over 3700 with 50 gr. bullets with the only signs of pressure being slightly cratered primers. But with the price of Shilen barrels being what they are I choose not to feed it a regular diet of those loads or try upping the charge any higher. Those cases are efficient little devils. Accuracy was only slighty better than the 22-250. Wish I still had the charge weights, but it's been too long ago and eventually traded the 250 for another 222 and use a lot of H322 and IMR 4198 in both. EDIT: The above statement dealing with achieving a velocity of 3700+ fps with a 50 gr. bullet using Reloader 7 with the 22PPC is NOT correct. The powder used was BL-C(2). F.
