Good morning all, I was wondering what your thoughts were on using an '06 for varminting,(not real heavy PD town use)mine has served me well, and with 110gr.v-maxs at 3400fps, it appears to hold its own against most varmint calibers, the only drawback being excessive powder usage.

CXL, i say 30.06 all the way,

ive been using alot of the 110 vmax in mine and on foxes and vermin you certainly get results, they really go off with a pop on some contacts.

i use 59 gns if n150 behind the 110 vmax in the 06 and maybe 49 gns in the 7mm08 or 44gns in the 243,

i wouldnt grumble about an extra 10 to 15 gns of powder or even call it excessive.

if however you were comparing between a varmint 17 rem load and a 30.06 varmint load then the powder usage is a hell of a hike, same results but really different hymn sheets,

but then who is comparing? i love the 30.06 on smaller stuff

keep those 110's flying!

Alex, what is the recoil and muzzle blast like with the 110's in the '06? I would love to see a ground hog or a PD go off with one of those. Or better yet a cat. Oops, wrong forum for that Big Grin.

there was a guy who frequented the forum a year or two ago., who was using either the 06 or the 300 Win Mag with the 110 grain V Max on head shots on seals in Norway... where that is legal...

'opened their minds' up like a book.... lol

Yup, that would have been Tomsky IIRC. He was using his 300 WM.

A "Norwegian varmint hunt" certainly would have put a smile on my face.

I think know you are going to have a great time with it. The recoil will likely take your target out of the scope, but if you turn the scope down and hold on tight you should be able to see some of the resulting mist. Watching through the binos as someone else shoots is a great time too.

I built a 300 Win Mag just for pd shooting. It has a 1.5" OD, 28" long barrel. 90% of the bullets through it are the 110 Gr. V-max. I am running them at @3750 fps as above that some of them tend to come apart.

Wait for a pd to be laying down facing you and hit them in the nose. The "show" that bullet puts on is nothing less than spectacular.

"excessive powder usage"?? Absolutely. Well over 20 lbs last year of just 4350. Instead of a monthly savings account, I have a monthly powder account. Wouldn't change a thing. It's the price of having fun.

bullshooter,

recoil and muzzle blast are no problem at all,
i have fitted a Ase Utra compact moderator, neat at only 7 and a bit inches long,
still get to see plenty of action on head shots, generally stuff hits the deck so fast and soo dead.
never really considered the recoil so it cant be that bad.
