BiebsPelt-Saving 22 Hornet bullet for Red Fox?
A friend uses the 35gr VMax bullet to keep the Red Fox away from his wife's chickens. She would now like to have one of the "victims" made into a full-body mount, but the VMax causes such a massive, softball-sized exit would that his taxidermist doesn't want to handle the mounting in that condition. Any suggestions for a 35-80 yard bullet that would make them DRT, but either disintegrate internally or have a small exit wound? A solid would save the pelt, but their property adjoins the heavy cover of a lowlands tract. Barnes has a new 45gr TSX, but might be too long for the Hornet. Single-feeding is not an objection, however.

dwheelsTry the Barnes 30 grain Varmint grenade made specifically for the Hornet. I haven't run my loads across a chronograph but a friend is getting 3100 fps with a full load of lil gun. His rifle is an Encore with a 26 inch barrel. At those short distances, you should get violent disintegration and no exit wound.
The faster these bullets are going when they impact, the more violent the disintigration and the shorter the penetration. Try em! DW

L. David KeithI use a .17 and there is no exit using the 20 grain. A friend has a Remington 5mm and it does likewise. A .22 LR will do the job on a red fox. Many African PH's grew up using the .22 Hornet. Some of them may give you their experiences if you ask.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

k-22hornetI've not killed a fox with my Hornet, but many a coyote has died. I use a Barnes 45gr XLC for coyotes and it works very well. Small hole in, small hole out. The TSX should work the same. Another option I've explored is using a softpoint meant for higher velocities. These seem to act like a controlled expansion bullet, especially when you get to the 50gr bullet.

BiebsThat's guys....he ordered some 46gr Winchester bullets to try, and will give his 22 a try-out as well. They're not any bigger than a housecat, so it should work.
