hey all, y hasn't any company tried to make a WSM rimfire? like take the .22WMR, and shorten the case, to make short and fat, but still holds the same abount of powder. like a .300WSM or something? wouldn't it improve balistics?

Well...the .17 HMR hasn't got old yet...maybe the idea of short 'n fat rimfire cartridge will realize within this decade.

would it have any better balistics compared to a regular .22WMR? or even a .22lr?

No offense crow_waxer,,,But do you realise the tooling expense the mfgrs. would incurr to gear up for such a thing? Then take a crap shot on whether the public would beat the doors down to buy it?Look at the hummer,,First,no rifles but ammo,,,,now rifles but no ammo, and that ammo is "simply"necking down .22wmr to .17,,,another step, another machine, etc. Have fun! There's that chance,,or not enough of a following to justify in the mfgrs. eye,,,,kinda like the 5mm rem. rim fire.

Many moons ago, I owned a Colt revolver called a .22 WRF, and shot gophers with a .25 Rimfire out of Stevens single shot rifle. The Colt, I was told was a NY Police revolver??? I think the .25 Stevens is being poorly made by Savage now. I have searched and searched for a .25RF Stevens, coming up empty.

The last time I checked the price of a .22 WRF was higher than large bore ammo. I've not had good luck with .22 Mags, but have an itch to get back into shooting it. I've never shot a .17, but have interest too. Any dedicated .17 shooters out there? Any fellers shooting the Ruger in Mag?

I've got two Ruger model 77's one in 22 mag and one in the 17. Like them both. The 17 is a little flatter shooting and a little more accurate (unless it's windy) But a tad bit more $ to shoot. That said I wouldn't trade either of them.

C-Waxer, the "ballistics" would depend on the Bullet weight, BC and velocity. Period. The problem with rimfires insofar as achieving more/bigger/better etc. is pressure. You can build a case that will take the pressure, but getting the firing pin with enough punch for reliable ignition is problematic. This was an issue for the .22 mag and only after the powder(Li'l Gun) became available was the .17HMR a viable cartridge. That is the crux of the issue as I understand it. Old rim fires of larger caliber were low pressure designs, some of rather large bore, some even bottle necked. One that I know of used a two pronged firing pin to assure ignition. Personally I'd like to see a rimfire of 40 something caliber with enough snap for hogs and/or whitetail, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

JMO, but the 5mm Rem was a good cartridge that sank due to poor marketing and a pathetic rifle design that was butt ugly to boot. It created a lot of initial interest then quickly faded...
