One of the local residents owns some property up next to the Willamette Nat’l Forest dropped by the house Monday night. He stops by every once in a while to shoot the breeze and drop off some eggs. He has 20 or so laying hens so I save him egg cartons and he brings fresh eggs. Can’t beat that.

It seems coyotes raided his henhouse Easter Sunday and he lost 8 good laying hens. This is the third time in three years this has happened. He has had chickens for about five years or so and never really had a problem before the first attack. It always seems to happen between 10:30am and 3:00pm. One of his neighbors has had this happen a couple times in the last few years also, and also right around the same time of day.

He was talking with another neighbor who lives farther down the hill before he came over Monday night. The neighbor told him three weeks ago his oldest daughter had walked out the front door before school and found 15 coyotes standing in the front yard. She went back in the house and got her dad and he came out and “scared” the coyotes away.

The same neighbor told him last year he had seen 7 or 8 coyotes out by the back fence. This guy and his family have lived in the same house over 10 years. Before last year had never seen more than 1 or 2 stray coyotes at a time.

He asked me what I thought he should do, and I said why don’t you let my friend and I come over and get rid of your problem. My friend just bought a new electronic caller and hasn’t gotten a chance to break it in yet.

The local guy (who hunts his property and other property in the area) said that sounded like fun. He asked if he could join us.

Well of course you can join us hunting on your land… Wink

After some discussion and planning it looks like I may get access to some really great varminting and big game hunting land here soon. It is hard to hunt even some of the National Forest land in his area because private landowners limit access (I can’t really blame them—once bitten, twice shy).

Who knows, maybe I can do these landowners a favor (have some FUN) and get a favor (access) in return?

Flippy-

Another hunting opportunity in what seems to be a prime area is plenty reason to get excited.

Here's hoping you guys get to go soon -- and don't forget to take pictures to post here!

Good luck on thinning out those 'yotes. It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it... Big Grin

Yo Flippy,

Sounds like a deal to me.

Congratulations on your new hunting opportunity - very nice - the Germans have good saying that I thnk you've already discovered - "One Hand Washes the Other".

I once lived in a German farmhouse in an upstairs apartment and hadn't live there too awfully long - perhaps a coupla months.

Came home one day (Wednesday evening) to find the Landlady beside herself. 10 dead Layers; all bitten behind the neck, none carried away. War Council including the local German Forester decided the marauder was most probably a Pine Marten. Several Traps set out in the farm yard.

Arrive Thursday evening from work; 9 dead chickens same MO, nothing in traps, Landlady now crying.

Arrive Friday evening; a little bit later since I'd had been to "Happy Hour" at the local pub. 10 additonal victims, all dead where they lay; Body Count now at 29. Landlady waiting for me in the Farm Yard; completely distraught, hyper ventilating and I'm seriously concerned about her blood-pressure.

Appears this issue isn't going to resolve itself. Combo rifle, barn loft arranged with hay bales overlooking chicken yard - an all-night vigil awaiting.

Nodded off a coupla times and of course you always wonder "Did I miss anything?" after the neck wrenching awakenings.....just at daylight 400 meters away outa the forest trots a Fox (turned out to be @ three month old Vixen Pup) straight towards the Barn. At @ 25 meters and without a second's hesitation hops up on the corner fence post and does the "Sitting Broadside Profile Trick". One of the best all-time Varmint targets I've ever pictured; especially at 10X with a #4 German Recticle. One load of Remington #4's clinched the deal.

I'm not one to shy away from a tipple or two but this was "One of those Days" the drinking started before most folks had even comtemplated what they were gonna have for breakfast. The German Forester showed up too, as well as the better part of the "Dorf" to view the Chicken-Killer.

After that I pretty much had the run of the place - she knocked a substantial chunck off the rent, too and treated me like her son.

One Hand Washes the Other.....have fun with your new-found opportunity!

Big Grin

Cheers,

Number 10

Had the same opportunity about 5 years ago or so...

a cougar was coming in at night and killing some lady's goats....

I wasn't with the guys the night they shot the cougar....

a week later, she started losing goats again...

turned out there was a second cougar... so some more of us were spending a night shift out waiting for the second cougar....

The lady had never owned a rifle before... however my doctor friend took her down to the local gunshop and she purchased a short barreled Ruger Number one chambered in 243...and a Leupold 2 x 7 scope on it...

she shot the second cougar one morning at about 10 am as it was sneaking into her barn after another goat...

another scenario like that, another cougar was attacking Llamas....

they found out where a cougar killed a 400 lb Llama and then drug the carcass about 20 feet up into a tree!

it never got to finish the dead llama... it was shot the following day, sneaking back onto the property...

coyotes have tried mulitple times to get into a pen around the corner from my house, where people raise beagles to sell... after they have a batch of pups, seems coyotes try to get in there and kill the pups...

the only good coyote is a dead coyote...

Most of my buddie's & my own vermin shooting permission's have been obtained in exactly this way, & more through happy landowners passing on contact details, If you do a good safe job the world is usually your oyster! Cool Steve.

Will do. He will be back in town next week and I hope to get a chance to go up and check it out then.

I ran into (yes, I said excuse me...) the neighbor who had the 15 coyotes in his yard. I asked him about it and he said, "Oh, it wasn't fifteen, it was only 12 or 13..."

I chuckled and said, "You should get somebody up there to take care of that before it gets outta hand---like 12 or 13 coyotes in your front yard isn't outta hand."

He said that sounded like a good idea. Wink
