The other testing I did on the varmint grenades were in a fast twist 22.250, and then tried in another 22.250 with a one in 12 twist...

I am learning that the Varmint Grenade is not as inherently accurate as a Sierra 40 grain HP, or the various plastic tip 40 grainers... BY a LONG shot!...

IN testing 5 powders today, I got mediocre groups in my opinions..

Those powders tested were
IMR 4895, 37.5 grains
IMR 4064 37.5 grains
IMR 3031 35 grains
RL 10 ... 34.5 grains
RL 15... 37.5 grains

Results show that don't waste your time with RL 10 or 15.. ( RL 7 is the best out of the 3 faster Reloader powders)..

IMR 3031 had 3 close ( touching) and then two bad flyers...

IM 4895 had 3 shots coverable with a dime, the 4 shots could be covered with a quarter.. and then one flyer...

The champ hands down was the IMR 4064 load.. at 100 yds, the group was coverable by a dime and all bullet holes were touching..

Rifle was a Ruger 77 VT...
Brass was Winchester
Primers were CCI,
Scope was a Tasco World Class Plus Target Scope ( older production)....

I was having high hopes for the Varmint Grenade... but as for accuracy, it needs catering to, and seems to be finicky...

It wasn't tested for its explosive potential...

however for myself, I am sticking to the old tried and true 40 grain Sierra HP, or the polymer tipped 40 grainers, like the Blitz Kings, the Ballistic Tips and the V Maxes in 40 grains, for small.. fast.. accurate... explosive.. and not so darn finicky...

cheers

I called barnes for reloading info on these. They recommend varget as the go to powder for for this bullet in 22-250. I don't have the data handy that they gave me. I used middle of the road charge of 37.5 grains. I have the same rifle as you. I get one ragged hole groups.

FrownerA shooting buddy at the range today was having another bad time with Varmint Grenades. Of 6 of his quality 22s only one ( 22BR ) is showing any promise. The .223s .222, and 22-250 Have been so-so to patern rather than group.

He asked me to find out from any of you who are having good results to let him know; cartridge, rifle, twist, and load components. The area he most frequents for varmint hunting does not allow bullets with any lead content. "Yes California". CRYBABYroger

Roger,

I am at least seeing good groups out of IMr 4064 in my 22.250s.. with one in 14 and one in 12 twists to them...

24 grains of IMR 4198.was definitely accruate queen of the powders tested in a 223, followed by IMR 4895...

25 grains of H 322 is also proving good in mine.. that was in the one in 12 twist rifles..
in 223...

I haven't tried it out in the one in 9 twist Savage...

PS. I am also working on some more accuracy loads on the 22.250 with 80 grain bullets for you ( and me) to see what works in the fast twist 22.250.. I am using the Ruger 77, with the one in 7 twist on it... when I am done I will have tested a total of 27 different powders, so I am sure I can find something in there that is going to give reliable accuracy.. I am going for accuracy, not velocity..

When I am done, I will mail the targets down to you so that you can compare the results for yourself...

cheers

Totally agree....I absolutely love my 50 gr blitzkings....super explosive....super fast....super accurate. Nothing quite like finding a trusworthy totally reliable round! I know they're going to hit exactly where I am aiming....every time!
