that pic of that shot car is sooo cool!! there a a couple of guys here in town that have blackpowder cannons... they shoot 1lb lead balls and one of them is my friend a reloading mentor... i had always wanted to try that cannon out on a car... thanks for the pics... there is a cannon shoot here evry summer at ft dodge ia where they shoot at paper targets.... we shot his cannon there a couple times... i also wondered what the terminal range would be from a 5 ft barrel from such a cannon... yep they are a blast!!

Hard to tell, but that looks more like a Parrot rifle type, which are sometimes rifled and amazingly accurate.

I just acquired a 2/3 scale civil war type with 2 1/4 inch bore. I've only shot "blanks" in it so far. 3 ounces of cannon grade black makes a nice boom. Frankly, this is a damn good replica and I don't see how the hell they ever hit anything with the lack of aiming ability.

BTW to tasco, I don't pretend to know for sure, but most sites I've read specifically warn against shooting lead balls in cannons.

Keith:

Sounds like fun, what diameter is your bore? Where or how are you getting/making the projectiles? According to the seller, billiard balls fit perfectly down mine, but that's kind of expensive cannon fodder.

I think that the main reason for saying not to use lead for projectiles, is the weight difference from iron shot. However, in small bore cannons, it does not make that big a difference. A 4 - 5" bore cannon it becomes another story, the weight increase adds up fast. As does recoil and pressure.

Zinc is a good substitute for iron/steel shot, and is easy to cast.
