Wasn't there a way to cut off nthe top with string ?
Wrap string around the neck of the bottle ,light it with a match .When the string has burned, tap the top of the bottle which will break it where the string was .

I have personally done that a number of times with great success. It's very, very effective, though it does shake up the sediment in the wine a bit.

Not to brag, but totally scored bonus points with my girlfriend's father showing him. He didn't believe me at first.....
