When I was very young, I used to watch "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson as host - long before he began taking frequent time off. I remember, two comedy "shaggy dog stories" both of which I hope someone can identify as a link to hear or to view the comedian who created the routine doing that routine. One was by Jackie Vernon, of the deadpan delivery. The routine was about a Zelig-type character who went to Rome (for a reason I do not remember). Two people on a balcony in the Vatican. Thousands of people were in a plaza, looking up at the Pope and another. The routine ended with someone pointing toward the men and commenting to Vernon something like, "Who is that guy?" Vernon's reply that ended the routine was, "I don't know who the other guy is, but the guy in the suit is Sig Sakowitz." . . . I understand there actually existed a Sig Sakowitz, something neither I nor millions of people who saw the routine knew. The real person had nothing to do with the routine. Vernon must have enjoyed the name. *** The second one, apparently, lives on by being told (in some form??) by current comedians. This "shaggy dog story" was about an Indian tribe, The Fakawi. I remember none of the details about them except they were fierce, proud, and had a terrible sense of direction. The routine ended with the comedian saying something like when the tribe got lost, as they often did, they would enter another tribe's village and proudly announce, We're the Fakawi," the humor being the comedian expressing the bluster as a question. ******* Any help, any link to audio or video of the classic comedians doing either routine would be appreciated. It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

Off the heading subject but kinda appropo considering the last post. True story here. Several years ago we raised 30+ bronze (sp) turkeys, They weigh out at a good 40 + lbs. Getting them ready to butcher + smoke for thanksgiving. One night we have a huge thunderstorm, lightning, etc. We had an out building up on pier + beam that we coated with chicken wire underneath to keep the coons, cats, etc. from pulling down the insulation batts. When the rains hit,the turkeys ran under the building. When the thunder clapped they panicked. When a panicked turkey flees he first raises his head then runs full speed ahead. That is what happened. They poked their heads through the chicken wire then too off, decapitating themselves. The next morning there were dead turkeys everywhere. My comment at the time to my partner/neighbor in this venture was,"Does'nt look like we'll be going to work in town today." Funny now, damn sure was'nt then. Never mistake motion for action.
