I have several western motion pictures starring James Stewart from "Winchester 73" through "The Rare Breed." These were all made in the early-to-mid 1950s except for "The Rare Breed" in 1966. Stewart appears to be wearing the same hat in all of them. Considering it took much hard use, I'm interested in identifying it. What is the hat's brand and model? It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

I have no idea, but given the time frame, my money would be on Stetson.

Well how about that. I have never heard of that hat company. You learn something new every day if you pay attention. Thanks Rusty.

Do you Staker Hats made Jimmy Stewart's hats back in the 50's? or do you think they are making copies of the hat Jimmy wore in the 50's?

A further search found this bit. One day I read on a trivia calendar that Stewart had a clause in his film contracts that allowed him to choose the hats he was to wear on screen. Curious, I decided to write him to see if this odd clause could possibly be true...He denied the hat clause, and told me he instead has a favorite hat. He found it one day in wardrobe and liked it, and wore it in his westerns. I see Tom Snyder asked Chuck Heston a question about Jimmy's headgear in his July 2 CBS program, and Heston confirmed that actors tended to find a hat they liked and kept it. Apparently it was back in the day of smaller wardrobe budgets, and actors who hailed from more frugal backgrounds, or who had clearer memories of frugal backgrounds.' http://www.mrwebber.co.uk Rusty We Band of Brothers! What a great thread. I just watched one of Jimmy's Anthony Mann westerns again the other night. I think my favorite of the series is "The Man from Laramie." The only one I have not seen is "The Naked Spur." I had the great pleasure of meeting Jimmie Stewart at the Boy Scout World Jamboree in 1967 at Farragut State Park in Idaho. He seemed as happy to be there as we were to see him. A great, great American. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author
