I take exception however to the comments about John Wayne. Of course he did not serve in the war directly but he always played a man on the right side. Good lessons were learned from his movies.

My late dad was born in 1909 and he never served in the military. He was a tool and die maker and worked as a supervisor in Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. Tool makers were exempt. He did do the home guard thing and carried a Springfield guarding a sub station. He was married and had a child in 1939. I hope you don't say that my dad was less patriotic than someone else.
