Due to being ill I've been watching some of the Outdoor Channels. Is it me, or is this stuff really as bad as it appears to me?

I take exception to that remark, that is the ONLY television program I watch, simply because they make no effort what some ever to pass it off as real, hence the uase of the word entertainment in the company name.

The problem, with all of the outdoor shows, hunting or fishing, is that to stay on the air and making money, they have to be able to have the host/guest be successful in a 30 minute to 1 hour time slot, which if you take out all the infomercial stuff, results to about 10 to 25 minutes or so of actual hunting/fishing footage.

Anybody that has ever spent more than 2 days in the field or on the water, knows it does not work like that.

I have always maiontained that nearly every hunter/fisherman that has been at it for a while could host one of those programs, if they were more into selling themselves and their sponsors products, than trying to actually show people how to hunt or fish, and getting the uninformed that it is called Hunting, not Murder, and Fishing, not Catching.

Even the rocks don't last forever.

I agree wrestling is better.

I quit watching TV a few years ago. One of the best things I've ever done.

After fishing quite a bit for a couple of years and not having much "luck" in spite of understanding cover, structure and what-not I got some advice watchng Bill Dance that made a big difference in the quantity and size of the fish I caught.
He spent the entire program talking about the importance of keeping your hook sharp, cutting off knicked line and keeping your knots fresh.
Never forget the basics.

We turned off the satellite subscription two years ago and have never looked back. The last outdoor show I saw was Ozark Adventures staring to idiots named "crowbar" and his son "Jason" They were doing something to Alligator Gar and ended up bleeding all over the place, telling the camera that this was the most fun they had all week. Then, a short time later, I watched a show called "Iron Chef America" in which a fat Italian Chef Shaved a Truffle mushroom onto whatever he was making and commented that the single large truffle was worth thousands. I picked up the remote, threw it and turned the damn thing off. Seems I am way out of touch to ever think a mushroom could be worth the price of a fine rifle. No, cessna, it's not you....Tv is a joke, but unfortunately it's not funny.

One of the things I really noticed is the time balance between actual hunting and the commercials. I understand the need for sponsor money, but enough already. I've spent the last several years building up a sizeable library of hunting DVD's. I'll watch them anytime. I really believe in the KISS system for my hunting. And does not require a great amount of equipment. Just the best that will do the job properly. I've also noticed my taste in magazines have changed to more specific ones. those like Huntin Fool, The Fair Chase magazine from B&C. I like Sports Afield since Diana made it a hunting mag again. Excess junk for hunting I don't need. I'm in my mid-sixities and I've figured out what works and what does not. Oh, back to TV shows. Why do they still whisper after the animal is down?

As to the whispering.....I have no idea. It never occurred to me to whisper after thoroughly announcing my presence with gun fire or by the sound of a broadhead smacking flesh.

I totally agree that cracks me up when the guy yells he is down then turns to camera and starts whispering. I like to watch them for the humor and to see how idiots hunt.

I watched one the other night and this guy whispered to the camera the entire time while sitting on a food plot. The segment was only 10 minutes long buit I bet in real time the camera guy was ready to beat his ass to make him shut up. It like watching COPS and being one. THe show cracks me up because they are just playing to the camera.

I think the most idiotic thing ever said on a hunting show is by Ted Nugent, after each head of livestock he kills. By the way, I use the term "livestock" because his hunts are mostly so pathetic that he might as well be in a pasture shooting domesticated critters....oh yeah, HE IS!

Nugent's over quoted line:
"the beast is dead, long live the beast"

What in the hell does that mean?

Is there a hunting program that seems geared for the intelligent hunter instead of the idiot? I realize that is a loaded question, but I really do get tired of people trying to entertain me. I get tired of them talking to me as though I had no brains. These hunting programs seem to be developed at a third grade level mentality.
