I own the eight-disk collection of A&E's "Nero Wolfe series, starring Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin. In the first non-pilot episode, "The Door Bell Rang," when just delivered huge crates are being opened, the background music sounds to me like a jazz or swing instrumental-only version of the Andrews Sisters' song, Bei Mir Bist du Schön." I have searched the worldwide web and the entire Montana library system to find this version of the song. No luck.

Can anyone help me out? If I am incorrect in believing the song is "Bei Mir Bist du Schön," that kind've explains why I can't find it. And if it is not, identify it if you can so I'll search correctly.

It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

Don't know if that is accurate. I've read a lot of the books but I don't think I have seen all of these episodes.

Here's your Andrews Sisters vocal rendition - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swPn8E644sA I don't know of an instrumental only version. But, it might have been part of another vocal version with an extended instrumental portion.

This one by Zarah Leander has a lot of instrumental in it. It's imo the best BY FAR version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imvDoeY7vEg. This is actually quite remarkable. Zarah Leander is singing in Swedish, the song is Yiddish and at the same time Zarah was the most popular, most glamorous singer in war time Germany. Although not so popular with the authorities. Goebbels used to refer to her as "that enemy of Germany". But, her version has the right sound and cabaret-ish accompaniment and is imo just the best.

As long as we're on a roll with Zarah, here's another - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA-vGU2--8U. It's supposed to be a Russian folk song but it has that same sound to it. If I recall correctly she wrote this one herself. Click on "show more" if you want to follow the words in German.

The old time radio series is fantastic if you can catch it on sat radio.

The Benny Goodman 1938 Carnegie Hall concert CD has a version which includes a great trumpet solo by Ziggy Elman in klezmer style. Klezmer music is Kosher Bluegrass, BTW!

Speaking of Klezmer, here's your original Bei mir bist du schejn - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUVEq6NC7mM

One of the commenters summed it up well, "Bei mir, dieser Lied ist schön".
