FAVORITE FIREARM

This is not about working your way toward some sort of conclusion. This is about generating some significant angst in you as you go through your (What are we calling it these days?) "Armarmentorium" and trying to pick out a "favorite."

It's like making out the will and leaving the preponderance of the estate to the "favorite child" -- and the reason monogamy is a failed concept.

There's not a gun in the safe that I don't absolutely adore. And all for different reasons.

I own a Win Mod 42 pump .410 that my grandfather gave me. It has exposition wood and the metal looks almost like new. That gun and I have some zen connection and I shoot it better than any other shotgun I own.

Ithaca #37 12 gauge, made in the early 50's. My uncle used it at the prison, he was a guard. Hold it upright and it damm near cocks itself. Its still the go-to for hunting pheasants and clays.

I have the remington 121 pump that both my father and myself were taught to shoot with by my grandfather, it was manufactured in the teens. Still use it squirrel hunting.

Ruger M77 in .300 win mag-not a special gun by any means, but special to me as my dad gave it to me for my 14th birthday and I have hunted with it ever since. Sometimes think of retiring her for something a bit different, keep it from getting banged up and what not, but just can't do it.

The one I am shooting at the moment.

All my guns shoot well or they get re-worked or traded. No one gun I have is my all time favorite.

My Dads gun and my first gun has sentimental value over the others, my STW is my go to gun but it doesn't shoot any better than the others, just right now, I am having fun shooting the Sh*t out of things with it to way out there.

My Wilson CQB is my favorite at the moment. It'll probably stay that way until I buy a double rifle or a nice side by side shotgun.

May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.

My dad bought a 1910 Model 94 in 32WinSpcl in 1942 or so. He was 12 or 13 at the time. He gave me the gun in 1975, just before we went to Italy. It was not in my possession at the time it was given to me. My Uncle Eddie had it in Minnesota. The years went by and I finally got the gun in 2001 for Christmas. It is now in my dad's gun cabinet at the family home back East. My dad took it back in late 2002. I'll eventually get it and it will be my prized firearm at that time. I have a few guns now, my more-or-less favorite being my big target rifle. It took 2-1/2 years to get it after the initial ordering of the receiver. It was at the gunsmith's for a year. I finally got it in late October of 2005. It cost so much and took so long, it is my favorite gun because it's a dream come true-- left-handed, long-action magnum in stainless with a 29-inch stainless Krieger barrel (fluted) and a thumbhole target stock. Weighs 18 pounds. 300WSM caliber.

For sentimental reasons, my favourite would be my SKB 600 U/O 12 gauge, I started shooting in 1982 and in 1985 wanted to take up clay target shooting. My parents bought me the SKB at that time, the reason it holds a place for me is that we were extremely poor then, but my parents did without a lot to buy me that shotgun. Something I will never forget, it's not a high class shotgun, but is pretty much priceless to me, and will never be sold. I had a fair amount of success with it as well, and I know my Dad was proud. It has had over 30 000 rounds through it in the 24 odd years that I have had it.

My favourite "extension of my arm" firearm is my 450 Ackley mag, for some reason I can just pick it up and hit things with it.
I'm sure others here will have a rifle/shotgun/handgun that is the same for them as well.

I think it would depend on circumstances. For just puttering around my reworked S&W model #25, 45 Colt. For groundhog hunting my Remington Sendaro 25-06, for targets at long range AR10t, for hunting practice and hunting a Winchester 1886 45-70.
I shoot the AR10 and the 1886 the most.

I have a story similar to Homebrewer. Union Army, Heavy Cavalry Sabre, 1860 I think. My uncle had it, then my cousin. I just dug it out of my cousin's attic. When I was about 8 I used to think it was a German war bring-back, because most of the other guns my uncle had were WWII souvenirs.

Sentimental favorite would be my pre-64 M70 30-06, a gift from my grandfather when I was 13.
But my current go-to rifle is a Brno ZG-47 7x57.

Favorite rimfire would be a Marlin 39-C, favorite shotgun a Remington 31 12 gauge, favorite handgun a Colt SAA 45.

No hesitation or angst, it is my Type 99 Arisaka. The rifle is complete with mum, bayonet, cleaning rod, dust cover, monopod, and sling. My late father brought this home from WWII and taught me how to disassemble it and reassemble it by the time I was 8. Every time I pick it up, I am back in a good place. It does not get any better than that

I have one of those! Patina worn, but mechanically perfect, a retired "riot gun." Last in a batch of 100 purchased by a local dealer, it needed some "tuning up." Someone refinished the stock with a spray plastic. It crazed over the oil finish in the wood.

Strip, buff, and the dealer couldn't believe it was the same gun. $85 out the door about 1995.

A model 63 Winchester autoloader in 22LR. It's like hugging your old girlfriend. She just knows what to do! I have owned it since the early 1950s. It has killed more rabbits and birds than I can remember. When Taurus recreated the Model 63, I bought two more.

The feeling of walking in the brush of West Texas with nothing but your 22 and both pockets full of ammo can never be replaced.

Favorite Rifle: Would be my Tubb 2000 in 6mm XC. It does any highpower competion well. I am routinely amazed by it's accuracy and the way it can be adjusted to fit the required position and firing point. It makes shooting at a 1000 yds seem like shooting at 100 yds!

Favorite Shotgun: Beretta 686 white onyx with sporting clays oil stock. A simple relatively inexpensive O/U shotgun that feels like part of you body.

Rifle, a 1929 Swedish Husqvarna sporter in 9.3x57, shotgun, a delightful little Darne 28ga sxs(French sliding breech) handgun a S&W M 41 semiauto .22 for which I have a 7" barrel and a 5 1/2" field barrel. Barrels are quick change and each has front and rear sight. to change, remove magazine, lock slide back, pull trigger guard down, lift off barrel and place other barrel on and close trigger guard. Takes about 15 seconds.

For handgun, Ruger Blackhawk Convertible-45LC/45ACP, works every time.

Rifle would be recently acquired Mann.Sh. Model 1952-30-06, kind of like shooting a Rolex compared to others I have. Would have to say close second would be my Long Range Rem.700, Krieger 30" Palma gun w/ old style Rangemaster walnut stock(still has the tuning screws in forearm) for it will deliver High Master scores from 600-1000yds if I do my part. Like and old friend.

Shotgun would be the Model 12 Winchester, 12 gauge bought some 10 years ago in like new condition and then had Simmons do the full treatment on it w/ show quality wood. Natural pointer and works on feathers or clay just fine.
