How do I make good coffee at home? I just cant seem to make coffee as good at home as I get at a Casino, Cracker Barrel or even the local Mcdonalds or Burger King (which is actually pretty good). Are there any particular brands you recommend? Any particular style coffee maker I should try? Any secrets you could share?

Walter prefers Kopi Luwak.

He has it flown in specially from Indonesia.

The secret to the great taste is the paradoxurus hermaphroditus which ingests the beans and processes it.

I'll let your imagination take over from here.

Best drunk with lots of sugar.

Take a look at the Keurig Brewer.

There are several different flavors of coffee to choose from.

The "machine" is very east to use, and it is always ready.

Now you're talkin. I mix CDM and Folger's Gourmet Supreme half and half. It gives me all the flavor of the CDM and Chicory but isn't bitter.

That's funny!! I do exactly the same thing!! I prefer the CDM but it's too stout straight up for anyone around here so I mix.

One of the best TASTING coffees I have ever had was in Zimbabwe.

We have every morning, it is instant, I cannot recall the name of it, but on the can it said:

30% REAL COFFEE!

I have no idea what the other 70% is. but it sure tasted wonderful by the Zambezi River clap

Saeed, I can only imagine, but, I would say that location is everything. Many mornings I have had my coffee reading about Africa and wondered what it would be like on the banks of the Zambezi.

"I have no idea what the other 70% is."

Probably Zambezi River water.

Do yourselves a favor guys. Roast your own coffee thumb. You would be amazed at how easy it is and the flavor you get can't be matched anywhere. I'm drinking Sumatra Lintong peaberry this morning that I roasted yesterday afternoon. REALLY good stuff. I pay anywhere from about 5 dollars a pound for most coffees to 30 dollars a pound for Jamaican Blue Mountain.

I've never roasted beans but I am a believer in fresh ground beans.

My coffee maker grinds them right into the filter basket and starts the brew cycle.

Good water also makes a big difference.

Missippian,
There are all sorts of coffees to be had at all sorts of prices, but not all of us can afford to drink $30.00 coffee every day.
If you're looking for something for everyday fare at a lower price, the next time you're in walmart cruise the coffee aisle and look for a company by the name of "Massimo Zannetti" that appears to be trying to rip off Maxwell House's customer base. The can is blue just like MH and they've even tried to duplicate the name by calling theirs 'Master Chef' rather than Master Blend.
You just might find it tasty. coffee

No matter what kind of coffee you like, grinding your own beans makes it that much better. You should keep the beans in an air tight container. Use good filtered water without a lot of oxygenation.

I get Kona coffee from Bwana Bob's Kona Coffee Fresh roasted when you order it. WE stayed with these people several years ago and had the great pleasure of whatching them roast the coffee!

I am also trying some Costa Rican Estate coffee that is very smooth.

Well said Rusty. The best way is to start with whole bean coffee. It actually only takes a few hours of exposure to the air before ground coffee starts to lose it's flavor. Whole bean coffee, if left exposed to the air, will take a couple of days. Also, whole bean, when resealed, will last a week to ten days, where as only a few days for ground coffee. In either case, don't buy more then you can drink in, say, a week. Grind your coffee only when you are ready to brew it. By the way DIYASUB I rarely buy the 30 dollar coffee. The norm is about 5 dollars a lb and good Kona's can go up to close to 20 dollars a lb. Most roasted Kona beans you see in the grocery stores are 10 to 20 percent Kona. The good coffee houses, like the one Rusty is referring, are 100 percent thumb. Look around at this site to give you guys an idea of roasting your own --> Green coffee beans and associated equipment.

By the way, I started with the cheapest roaster, about 80 bucks at the time, they had and have worked my way up to the Gene Cafe'. I still have all three that I've bought over the years and they all still work and are used. You can't imagine the smooth, full bodied flavor you can come up with "rolling your own" Wink.

What can I say. That's a decision you'll have to make Wink. I'm going to guess here that you probably have a safe full of rifles. Simply delay your next one and you are set for the best coffee you've ever had Big Grin.

Dunkin Doughnut coffee is awesome. I too buy the whole bean and it very good. Just as others have said, keep it in an airtight container and good water is best.

Though I will respect everyone's opinion, and yes Dunkin Donuts is good, you've simply never tasted coffee until you've had REAL fresh roasted coffee. Be it from home or from a coffee house that roasts it about 12 to 24 hours before you drink it, it doesn't matter. There is nothing like "tweaking a load" just as you would in your reloading efforts. It's always better then "factory ammo".

By the way, Starbucks is CRAP........
