I carry too much crap with me to the deer stand I've decided. Nowadays, I can just leave all that stuff in the UTV or truck depending on where I'm hunting, The past couple of years I've started using a Havalon Hydra knife for a lot of the cutting up but don't need to have that in the stand with me when I think about it. However, I do really really like to have something with a gutting blade that I may never use if I drive a motorized vehicle to the animal. Anyway, thinking about getting a Victorinox Hunter (not Hunstman). I;m just wondering if anyone has ever actually used this blade:

There's a more robust and modern one now, but unless that gutting blade works somehow better I'd rather go with the smaller one:

Anyway, I'b be interested to hear if anyone has actually used one of these blades and they proved useful. Thanks, Mark

P.S.- sorry about the picture sizes!

used the gutting blade for chamois and roe deer. i have the same as the red one but in green version with the roe deer on it.

i never had it for gutting a bear but im pretty sure it will work as well on a bear.

Different model but yes I’ve used the same main blade a number of times on deer elk and black bear. It works just fine. Easy to sharpen and takes a nice edge. If you lose it your not out much. I think I have four of them floating around in my stuff. I like them since I do a lot hiking when I’m hunting because they are pretty light.

Mine doesn’t have that gutting blade though, in fact I had no idea that’s what it was. I’m not sure a serrated blade would work that well? If you personally like them just carry a Stanley utility knife with the hooked blade for gutting. Fast and easy to use.

Tried a couple and I don't need or care for them. Just another gimmick IMO. But, I'm old and sot in my ways!!

Personally, it is something that I wouldn't have or buy!

Keep yer powder dry and yer knife sharp.

I have used the olde model knife, and the gutting blade for over 30 years, works well on antelope from duiker to kudu and gemsbuck....many many springbuck...sharpen regularly.

I agree with Ray. I use two fingers to keep the gut out of the way and split the fingers with a normal blade. Opens up like a zipper.

Probably shouldn't be posting this but wish I could tell you how well/poorly it worked but forgot the dang thing last weekend! Ended up field dressing with a small spyderco, LOL.

Guess I'll try again next weekend!

I use a 4" case or a small hunting knife that I made, I have a dozen or so smaller knifes.
