Finishes for corrosion resistance

Some talk in the gunsmithing forums has gotten me thinking (scary!) about rust bluing a knife.

What would be the best do-it-myself-at-home finish for a non stainless steel knife? I was thinking about trying to build one from a kit and was wondering about a finish to reduce corrosion. It would be a fixed blade hunting/caping knife for deer and hog sized animals, and usually be cleanable within a few hours after getting bloody.

Would rust-bluing be enough? Seems popular on rifles seeing similar conditions (except for the blood part).

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

I blued a Schrade Little Finger as a preemptive measure years ago. Seems to work well.
