You can drill the hole with a regular metal bit and leave the stag as thick as you can. A drill press with a vise is best. Devcon 2 ton epoxy or I have had some guys say they use JB Weld. If you dont have a screw on pommel you can drill through the side of the horn and through the tang and drive a pin through it. This way you've got more than the epoxy holding it and looks more like they did it before they had epoxy. The tang may be hard to drill through unless its been annealed, you may try drilling a test spot before installing your handle if you plan to try this.
