I'm looking for a plain-edged drop point, less than 4" long, but with a real-sized handle, suitable for med-large hands. And for under $100. Where is it?!?! Some close runners in the style category (not necessarily ones I would buy, just talking profile) are the Benchmade 190, Knives of Alaska's Alaskan Hunter (if it had a more open and rounded butt), Cold Steel Master Hunter (but with shorter blade), and really close to what I'm looking for is CRKT's Brooks Range Pro Hunter handle stuck on the blade of the Wrangell Range Pro Hunter... maybe you get the point. Anyone know where I can find it? Thanks!

I think I'm goign to get a Buck Vanguard, just to try out the concpet. Pretty cheap, so if I decide I need a skinner or clip point, I won't be out that much. And the handle I think i can live with at least for a short while. Probably should mention this is for field dressing elk. I'd like to get it down to a saw and one knife, and if I can find the perfect big-bellied drop point, about 3 1/2" long, it might do. Even thinking maybe Knives of Alaska's monster skinner w/the gut hook.

Billy Watson has a fine drop point eastern hunter for $60.00, curly maple handle, guard forged into blade and file work. A fine little knife. The handle might not be as big as you like, I like it and my brother-in-law has big hands and he likes it. www.watsonknives.com , it's worth checking out, he has some nice knives along with hatchets and hawks. All are hand forged. I'd like to hear what you come up with.

Bwana-be, You should definately check out a FallKniven F-1. It's a little smaller than the Cold Steel master hunter but still large enough for Elk. It has better steel (VG-10) than the Cold Steel or the CKRT. Mine Field dressed an Elk and would still shave hair. If you shop around you should be able to find one for just under $100.......DJ

Anyone use Buck's Alpha Hunter, or one of the other brands' designs with the full tang extending outside the grip? Look like it would sure give a positive grip, but might be annoying, or even painful. Gerber, and one other I think has a similar deal, so maybe it works as claimed?

Here is what I posted on an earlier thread: See: What Knife do you use? I like the classic hunting knife designed by Bob Loveless nearly 40 years ago. Beretta is offering 2 models (hunter and semi-skinner) this year with various handle materials and you can't beat the price on the Zytel plastic handled configuration ($46 incl SH). The sheath is not up to the same quality of the knife in my opinion but will hold up for a few years I expect. I just bought one about 3 weeks ago so have yet to use it, but it looks to be very well made. They have models with fancier handles but cost more of course. See the link at Knives Plus who have given me good service in the past. Good luck Paul Beretta Loveless Skinner

The Schrade PH1 is back in production and on sale at Knife Outlet for $49.50 until June 22. It's my all around knife. Just the right size and a decent blade. I have a Falkniven F1 and it's a great choice too. I just like the feel of the Loveless design Schrade.

Beretta knofe is your answer as posted above. This is a great designe, and a good feeling knife. Take a look at one, and you decide if it is what you are looking for. There are a lot of great steels out there now, but I really like ast-134, and d-2 I am shure there are other steels out there that will out preform these now, but they have the balance of edge holding and ease of sharpening that I like.
