Bunch of years back when I was poorer than I am now but had more money. I made the wheel out of white oak. It didn't like the heat and I couldn't keep the corners from giving out. A drive or idler might work though.

Given the rate they are turning, it would be interesting to see (from a distance) what would happen if a wood contact wheel developed a crack and let go.

LIndy, it takes money to make money. Spend it, but a wheel that you are not guessing at or risking life and limb. I understand about trying to save money, for heavens sakes, my wife rewashing ice cubes, but there are some things you do not risk.
