Am I the only guy on the planet that has never had much accuracy luck with H 4895??

No matter what bullet weight and caliber combo, it has been mediocre at best.

Yet with IMR 4895, the results have been the exact opposite.

Just wondering if it is me? or is this a chronic problem. I haven't found many people who use it regularly, except a few old guys who are still using the same 500 pounds of it they bought for $25.00 back in 1959.

Hey Seafire:

I actually have had good luck with it in the one caliber I have used it in : 7mm BR. I have a 21" barreled model 700 (#1 Shilen) that I use in place of a 30-30. Anyway, it groups quite well with H4895, though I confess the IMR version seems to do a bit better.

In fairness, this particular rifle seems to choke down ANY concoction I throw at it, almost always producing very respectable accuracy - I could probably seat the bullets backwords and still manage 1.5 MOA... [Big Grin]

I do not know what to tell you except that I would not want to be without H 4895. I have tested the IMR and H versions in several 22-250 Remingtons and always had best luck with the Hodgdon powder.

I use the heck out of H 4895, I shoot it in a 17 Remington, a .223 Remington, a 7TCU, a couple of 22-250's, a 7mm-08, etc.

I have a brand new Kimber 84M sitting in the safe, just waiting for the scope rings to show up from New York. It is chambered for 22-250 and the first powder I intend to try in it is H 4895.
(Had to buy scope bases from Kimber, seems no one else makes them as of yet.)

So I guess this is what makes horse races.

I have never used the current H4895, only the old stuff they used to sell in paper bags. As I recall, it was pretty mediocre then too (1954!!). I use IMR 4064 or 4320 for all loads in the range for which 4895 would be appropriate, but it just worked out that way, not because these powders are necessarily better! [Big Grin]

Mr. Flowers:

I did try some of this in my Ruger VT in 22/250 with 55 gr FMJs based on your suggestion.

I can't say that I have had no luck with this powder any more. The Ruger sure liked that load.
I went with the sedate 32.5 grains load and the FMJ.

Definitely a winner, and will be this rifles new main load, with that bullet.
RL 7 tho is still my powder of choice in the 22/250, but the H 4895 was almost as accurate.

FWIW I use H4895 in my 7mm TCU(s). Works great. With 120s and 139/140 gr. bullets, only H4895 and H335 give top velocities...
