I just picked this rifle up for $275. I'd like a mild load that will function the rifle, a 165 grain bullet pushed to around 2600 fps. The rifle has been fired 46 times since new and is in excellent condition. The only round fired in it has been Remington 180 grain PSPCL which worked pretty well on everything the previous owner shot with it. My use will be night hunting feral hogs.

my dad just picked up a like brand new model 4 semi auto. put a new scope on it, expecting the typical 4 in groups. i had loaded up some 165 hornady interlock flat base bullets with 48 grs of Imr 4064. fps was rite at 2600 on my Oehler. the damm thing shot 4 consequetive 1in maybe 1in and 1/8 (3shot) groups. i could not believe it and would have wagered a lot of money that no Rem autoloader would do that. i ve since had it to the range a second time and it shot every bit as good the second time. hope it works for you.

The guy I bought the 7400 from said he was getting 1 1/2 inch 3 shot groups with the factory ammo which was good enough for all his deer hunting. He now does a lot of hunting out of small box blinds and didn't like having his brass bouncing around inside the 4' by 4' box stand. He replaced the autoloader with an H&R single shot in 30-06. I don't have any 4064 laying around so I figure my first efforts will start with AA2520 which is a bal powder developed for match loads in military style autoloaders. Hope it works in my rifle.

I tried two loads using the AA2520 and the 165 grain Ballistic Tips. The highest I went was 47.0 grains and it still wasn't fully opening the action. I tried 53.0 grains of H414, almost but not there yet. Then I tried 56.0 and 55.0 grains of AA4350. Both loads functioned the action just fine and I figure I am getting close to the 2600 fps I am looking for. I will have to go to the range soon. I may cut a coil or two off the recoil spring to be able to use lighter loads, don't know yet.
