Hey Parryj Did you have your barrel checked before shooting .312 bullets or did you just start shooting them? I was wondering if the .312 might shoot well in my rifle. actually I found out I was measuring my groups wrong. A long time shooter showed me how and my loads have been 3/8 and 1/4 with 180 grain .311. But I always wondered about the .312 bullets.

I slugged the barrel and discovered that the barrel was larger then .311. .311 is the size for 303 brit. 7.7 is slightly larger. My rifle is an early one with chrome bore and aircraft sights. It has been sporterized and the sights are removed. It will shoot sub MOA with the .312 Hornady Spire Point over IMR 4064.

Hi Blob 1 and parryj, I also have a 1939 chrome bore 7.7 rifle that I had built into a Manlicher with a 21 inch barrel. I have taken more deer with this rifle in the past 20 years than I have with all the rest combined, and I have been hunting for over 45 years. I shoot 42.0 gns of 3031 behind a .311 Sierra spitzer using CCI primers. From a bench I can shoot 1 inch groups as a rule with the exception being the occasional flyer in the 2" range (when I get sloppy). Blob 1, my best group to date has been a 3 shot .756 group at 100yds using the 1 3/4X5 Redfield on 5 power. I measure my groups from outside edge to outside edge. However some use center to center or inside edge to inside edge. Any way you measure it 3/8ths and 1/4 inch groups ARE OUTSTANDING SHOOTING!!!!!! parryj, I may just try the .312 Hornady sounds interesting. I figure in order to get my moneys worth out of this $75.00 rifle which was the cost of the base rifle 20 years ago, I have to use it!!!!! . The rifle now sports a full Manlicher stock in dark claro walnut, carved oakleaf and acorn pattern wrist and foreend, D/T trigger, Williams fold down rear and low ramp front sight, Jeweled spoon handled bolt and follower, solid dark brown recoil pad, topped off with a Redfield 1 3/4X5 with see through mounts. Good luck with yours, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine, I don't think you can do better (on the Japanese end) than the chrome bored 7.7. Take care and God bless.

One of my best loads (accuracy) so far is 30-06 Winchester reformed brass, WLR, 22.5 Blue Dot and a Hornady 130 SSP bullet. I have not chronographed it yet but assume it is moseying along somewhere about 2300-2500 fps. I am lucky enough that my rifles tight bore allows use of .308 bullets!

I just looked up my most accurate load for the 7.7 and it is Hornady .312 spire point over 46.5 grains of 4064 with Norma brass. .714 group at 100 yards. Someday I'll have to chronograph this load.
