richj, I have a little Brno 8X57 also but have only been shooting heavy cast bullets out of it with a surplus powder that went sour on me last summer.. Haven't shot it since.. In my research on 8X57 loads I came up with this data by 450/400. 450/400 one of us Posted 17 February 2008 21:44 Hide Post My 21h has a 22" barrel, so that probably accounts for the slightly lower velocity. The kicker is that I am getting .5" groups at 100 yards with a 1.5x5 Leupold. I am using 49.8 grains of H380. I get the same groups with the Swift A Frame (200 gr) and with the 180 gr Barnes TSX (2650 fps), same size group with the same powder charge and virtually the same point of impact without scope adjustment. I have several choices as you can see. I was reluctant to use the A Frame because of inconsistent availability. At one point they weren't available for 8 months. I have killed with the Barnes and it is VERY impressive. I just wanted to see what members experience has been. The big advantage of the Speer over Hornady's (195 grain) identical offering is no cannelure groove. So that you can seat it out to the CORRECT official German Army length for that bullet of 80.50mm. In fact ALL German Army 8mm Mauser loads whether with the original 220, post-19-4 154 or post-1934 198 grain bullets use the same OAL. In good old fashioned inches that is 3.17 inches. Otherwise I think that you'll struggle to get a useful powder charge with Hodgdon H-4831 that isn't at least slightly compressed. If you 4895 load is giving 2409fps that is pretty much about German Army "spec" for the loading of that 198 grain bullet which was a velocity of around 2490fps (depending on sources). So I'd be pretty happy - if no pressure signs - that your 4895 load does what the original did.

Remember the good Non-Corrosive Portuguese 198 grain Machine gun ball sold some years back? It had 45 grains of fine grained ball powder. Pulled that bullet and seated the 200 Speer to max OAL for the old 98 and killed deer. Not sure I would recommend it but they shot well. Worked fine with the 185 Rem CL too! dmw "The liberty enjoyed by the people of these states of worshiping Almighty God agreeably to their conscience, is not only among the choicest of their blessings, but also of their rights." ~George Washington - 1789
