Alright, here we go.

For deer, 130 grain Remington Core Lokt, WW case, 60 grains of H4831, and WLR primer. In most good rifles that load will go inch or under and clock some 3080 fps out the tube, depending on barrel length. Jack O'Connor used to use 62 grains for some 3200 fps, but that may be too hot. Always work up from below at least 10 percent and you will keep your face and fingers.

For elk, although I think the caliber is marginal on elk, a good NOSLER one fifty or one sixty Partition is the way to go. WW case, WLR primer, and fifty eight grains of H4831, should give you about twenty nine hundred fps and excellent accuracy.

For varmits, I used 100 grain Hornady, mil .06 cases CCI std. large rifle primers, and forty nine point three grains of IMR 4064. Accuracy was great and velocity about 3200 fps...not the fastest load, but a real good one.

So there you be, have fun with a classic.

I like a 150 gr. Nosler partition in front of 50.1 grs. of IMR-4350 using Win. large rifle primers. I've found seating depth is probably more important than the powder used. Play with seating depth by measuring to the ogive. Mine are 0.010" off the lands. I get consistant 3/4" groups with this load out of my Ruger Mod. 77.

I haven't tried these on game, but they should perform well:

My 270 is a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle with a slim 22 inch barrel. It has always been "slow," meaning that I can't get the velocities from it that other people claim to get from their rifles.

But recently I tried IMR 7828 with 150 gr Sierra boattail bullets. 60.5 gr. of that powder in Winchester brass with CCI 200 primers, loaded to an overall length of 3.35 inches and crimped with the Lee Factory Crimp die gave me velocities of 2907 f.p.s. and accuracy of 1 inch or better at 100 yards. I would not hesitate to use this on elk, or anything smaller. (It's a hot load, so start below and work up to it.)

Another load that gave good results in terms of accuracy is 130 grain Hornady Interlock softpoint flat base bullet, 54.5 grains of H 4350, Winchester case, CCI 200 primer, loaded to 3.345 inches overall and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die. This gave a velocity of 2860 f.p.s. and a 100 yard four-shot group that measured 0.86 inch. This should be an excellent load for deer-sized animals, out to maybe 300 yards.

130 gr boattail 54.5gr's of H-414 in a Win case with CCI-250 primers, it will do 3100fps in a 22" barrel. You must use CCI-250's, it really make the difference with ball powders.

54 grains of IMR-4350 under 140gr Hornady Interlock Boat-Tails. Remington cases and WLP primers. Seated .015" off the rifling. Clocks at 2900 fps from a 22" barrel. Deadly accurate out to 300yds.

53 - 55 H/AA/I4350 and any decent 130 grain bullet should give you a super load. Most 270's I've loaded for have worked best at 54.5 grains, giving around 2,980 FPS and sub 1" groups.

GSF1200 - I've seen you mention that H414 load a number of times. Just picked up another 270, so I'm going to give it a try. I've never really had that much success with H414 in calibers that other guys raved about (7-08 and 7x57, specifically). Maybe it's the lot, or, maybe it IS the primers. I'll use the CCI 250's. Have you ever had any pressure signs? Just curious, because 53.5 is shown as max in the 2002 Hodgdon guide.

I've fired that load is several .270 without high pressure signs. The Win case is lighter, than Rem or Fed, if you use Rem subtract 1 gr of powder. H-414 also works great in 30-06.

GSF1200 - Tried the H414 load out this weekend. Did 51, 52 and 53, with 130 Hornady, CCI250's and W-W cases. Velocity (22" barrel) averaged 3,060 with the 53 grain load, no pressure signs, and decent accuracy. Have to work a little bit with seating depth and such, but, it looks like a pretty good load.

BTW - Checked an older Hodgdon manual, and it lists 54 or 54.5 grains as max [Confused] Tough keeping up with all the changes.

My favorite 270 Win load is as follows:
Nosler 130 grain Ballistic Tip
58.0 grains of Reloder 22
Federal 210 Match primers
Winchester Brass.
Fps 3100
I have shot this load in quite a few 270's and it seems to perform good in all of them with groups usually under 1" @ 100 yards.

That's a pretty mild load, I use 58.5gr's of RL-22 with a 150gr Nosler.

So far, to date, the most accurate load shot out of my M70 Fwt is Hornady 150gr SP, 56.0 gr H4831, Win brass, & Fed 210 primers. Loads are neck sized with Lee collet die and crimped with Lee Factory Crimp in the cannelure. 100 yd 3 shot groups (pencil barrel, don't overheat) go into the high .600s. I know it's not a max, prairie scorching load, but it's accurate in my rifle.

.270 Browning A-bolt, 22" bbl.
150 gr Nosler Partition
CCI 250 primer
54.0 gr. IMR 4350
Fed brass
shot at 40 degrees F.

ave 2796 fps mv
gives 2604 ft lbs muzzle energy

Approx downrange ballistics in yards: 0.0 @ 200

50 = 2710 fps, 2445 ft lbs, +0.73"
100 = 2620 fps, 2288 ft lbs, +1.78"
150 = 2535 fps, 2140 ft lbs, +1.56"
200 = 2450 fps, 2000 ft lbs, 0.0"
250 = 2365 fps, 1865 ft lbs, -3.01"
300 = 2285 fps, 1740 ft lbs, -7.5"
350 = 2200 fps, 1620 ft lbs, -14.0"
400 = 2125 fps, 1505 ft lbs, -21.7 "

Using a good penetrating bullet like the Nosler Partition, I've killed elk at 300 yards with this load. (Lord, I hate the word "harvest" in hunting. Wheat is "harvested." When I hunt, I kill game when I am blessed in the field. Lets give them the dignity of not over-politicizing what game does with each other and we do with game. IMO we sound weak when we cringe and say "harvest," and we open the door to criticism.)

Amen to BBBruce - that's the exact load I use, after cooking it up for myself years ago. It works equally well with 150 gr. WW Powerpoints (of which I still have several hundreds, and damn well plan to use 'em up! There was a sale on - what can I say...)

I have another good one - 100 gr. Speer HP, over 60 gr. of IMR 4350. Doesn't leave much of the leeward side of a coyote, but they sure go where you point 'em.

130 gr. Nosler Partitions
56 gr. IMR 4831
CCI 200 primers.

Of course, any of these loads anyone is giving you is only proven to be accurate in their gun. You need to work up a load that works for your gun. Pick a bullet with a good reputation for terminal performance and work on it from there. Remember, go with the most accurate load, and that probably won't be the highest velocity load. Good luck and good shooting!

I have used the 270 Winchester for better than 35 years now to hunt big game and varmints. Still have the one that I bought back in 1966. I has its seventh barrel and third stock at present. Hands down the one load, if I was only allowed one to use for everything would be as follows. Nosler 150-grain Ballistic Tip bullet over a charge of 52-grains of IMR4350 powder and a Federal 210M primer. Longest kill with this load to date was at a laser measured 830-yards. Give it a try and you won't be sorry. I have shot this load out to 1150 yards on targets. It is accurate and a real killer.
