105 grains of H4831. Should get you to just over 2,400 fps.

Shumba right on.
That Jack O'Connor load.
Get 2450-2475 fps with good 25" barrel CZ.
Sub-MOA or something wrong.
Works for me.
Aloha

I have looked at two of Kevin Roberson books (The Perfect shot and Nyati)and they infer that loads should be well under 2,400 fps. Most of the info I've found are for hotter loads.I'm a bit confused as alot of buffalo hunting video shows shots taken at animals in herds. Is there much of a chance of X-bullets or other top quality bullets exiting with loads over 2,400 fps?

Randy, there have been several threads on the African Hunting forum on buff hunting in herd situations. The conventional wisdom is to use soft's for the first shot to avoid the situation you mentioned (over penetration).

I shot my buff (Oct. 2001) with my 375H&H because that is what I was carrying at the time.

My buffalo was in a herd and there were buff behind him. I shot him first with a 300 grain Swift A-Frame at 2,525 fps. It went through both lungs but did not exit. It made him sick really fast and the herd took off with my buff quickly falling behind.

As soon as there were no buff behind mine, I put a 300 grain Barnes solid (also at 2,525 fps) through both lungs again. This bullet sailed right through. After that 2nd shot, the buff was really slowing down and I place another Barnes solids into the shoulder. That bullet penetrated both shoulders and kept on going. After the 3rd shot, my buff was just standing there and not moving. I quickly placed a 4th shot into the shoulder again (2" from the previous shoulder shot). Again, I got full penetration and the bull dropped to the ground at the shot.

If I had only been using solids, I either would not have taken the first shot (and missed the chance at this 41" buff) or I would have been paying two trophy fees and my PH would have some explaining to do.

I think Kevin Roberson suggests loading down the 375H&H to 2,400 FPS to avoid over penetration of the 300 grain solid. He notes that the 9.3x62 with 286 grain (similar SD as a 300 grain .375) solids do not usually exit when loaded to 2,350 to 2,400 fps.

You should try posting on the African or Big Bore boards and asking for peoples experience when shooting buffalo with a 400 grain .416 bullet at 2,400 fps.

Shumba, your exp. is very sim. to (3) of my friends buff. hunts. Multiple good hits w/ 300gr .375 bullets, solids almost always exiting. That's why I am having a .404 made! [Big Grin]
