Anyone got a good load for the 38-40 in a '92 Winchester using hard cast and powder coated 180gr pills in new Starline brass ?...not sure if its feasible but would like around the 1600 fps mark or better ???
Has a new barrel and tight chamber.

Just for a reference, I played with a Marlin 1894. in 38-40
!80 grn bullet, 19 grns of 2400 gave 1800 fps in a 24" barrel.
The 92 is strong, but the brass is not. I doubt if the loads I worked up, the brass lasts very long. I expect your 1600 fps is very doable.
2400 gave the best vel that I tried.

Thanks Tony.
The problem these days is finding 2400, or 4227.
Any one had any luck with other powders ?

How about 24.5 grns AR2205 with a 180
and 1750 fps from a 26" barrel
Right from the ADI handloaders guide!
Have you made any progress on your Carcano, 35/6.5 case project? I was hoping the neck/throater I sent had a long enough throat to seat spitzers out so they would feed well.

4227 is a great powder with jacketed Hollow POints,,

Starline brass is the only brass thats worth a flip in the 38-40 its hard and last forever...

I may have quite a bit of that good Starlne brass and some loaded stuff Id sell, I put my 38-40 #178 rifle in the Texas Ranger Museum recently.
