Howdy all, been working up loads in my new 22-250 last six weeks or so and just got back on line so thought I'd post some experiences and results.Got my Savage 12BVSS and had my gunsmith skim-bed the action for me and started to try the load suggestions given to me in a post on this and several other reloading forums as a place to start. Also got the 22-250 load booklet from Cabelas that lists all the loading manuals sections on this cartridge,Started with H380 and 50 gr Hornady V-Max bullets with Federal match magnum primers for combination hunting and paper punching duty.Started at 37.5 grains and worked up to 39.5 to find that 39 seemed the OCW for this gun, arrived at 2.493 COL that is .030 off the lands as the optimum seated length for accuracy also.Got the gun down to .250-.350 groups with this receipe and thought I was there when I decided to try all my powders to see what some of the others would do.Varget at 37.5 grains with CCI BR2 primers also turned in .350 groups.IMR 4895 at 34grains with Winchester LRP was equal to the H380 and most likely less temperature affected in hot summer weather.H414 at 40 grains with Federal Match Magnum primers was another solid performer. The last powder I tried turned out to be the trick in my gun,IMR 4064 at 36 grains with Winchester LRP was the first powder to get me some groups in the high ones(.151-.172-.184)and was the hands down winner for my load work.I'm not about to try to improve on this load combo(I was considering trying MK and BK Sierra bullets) and simply neck size my Winchester brass and sort in 1 grain weight lots.I do uniform the primer pockets and flash holes as well as tweak each load on an RCBS case guage to one and a half thousandths or less run-out.Interestingly the exact same load with CCI BR2 primers wasn't quite as accurate. My next project is to work up a load in my 7mm-08 deer rifle as soon as it gets back from having the action trued and plan on starting with IMR 4350-Varget-and RL 15 behind some inter-bonds and paritions. Will post when I get some info and results.Oh by the way the 36grain 4064 load is 3834fps average at 15 feet for velocity so while not a barn burner it sure shoots sweet with no pressure signs or velocity deviation! woods All groups are three shot.

Woodie: That is a difficult post to read thru. However once one navigates thru it, you have some interesting info to share. I have found also that a 22/250 that is reduced by about 10% from max, sure improves a lot more than 10% in accuracy. For lighter bullets, 40/45 grainers, I have started using Reloder 7. The most accurate load I have in my two rifle is with 40 grain Noslers or Blitzkings at 4450 fps with 34.5 grains of RL 7 ( for the critics, and Morality Police on line, Work up & BlahBlahblah ( use your head). You won't believe how flat shooting that combo is. Good luck with the 7/08 project.

Sorry.........catchy writing is definitely not my strong suit....or even being to the point or having any continuity However that jumbled up,somewhat disjointed info above took about 6 weeks of experimenting to arrive at and has been quite satisfiying in results to this point.May try some 40 grainers at some point down the road and definitely plan on doing a comparison of BT - MK - BK - and V-Maxes all in 50 grain after the hunting season is done and I've got time on my hands.Never thought the gun would shoot this well so who knows if it will still get any better Heck I've even considered getting the action trued but feel I better leave well enough alone cheers woods [ 09-11-2003, 15:29: Message edited by: woodseye ]

My Savage model 11 likes 33.6 Gr of IMR 4064 with a 55 Gr Winchester PSP pill.It shoots in the high .1`s and low .2`s.I don`t have a chrono so I don`t know the FPS.

Jay.......Coming at you. Thats some good groups ther Yote,I don't think I can improve on the 4064 in my rifle at this point, maybe pick something up by experimenting with other make bullets. woods [ 09-14-2003, 17:37: Message edited by: woodseye ]

Woodseye, you've definately got a shooter on your hands. I've got only two suggestions for you. One is after you think you've found the right load, try a couple five shot groups with it before you decide it's the "one". The other is don't waste your barrel life on load developement. It looks like you've got a couple recipes that will flat out shoot, the 22-250 will eat up a barrel in no time flat. Been there done that.

Five shot groups open up to about .250-.350 and I count every shot fired in the barrel since it was new,I'm at a little over 300 and believe in cooling well between groups so at 3800fps should see another 1200 rounds or so, and with the amount of varmints to shoot this far north(not a lot of chucks and a limited season on crows!) I'd say I'm fixed for quite a few years even with a fair amount of target shooting mixed in.Still plan on using about 30-40 more to test some different make bullets for accuracy but thats about it now other than using it for what I bought it for.Actually I'm looking forward to putting a Shilen Match grade barrel on it at some point in the future and seeing what it will do compared to the factory one.Barrel swapping isn't a big deal on these Savages and cost isn't that bad for a nice upgrade in a couple years.Good Shooting. woods [ 09-14-2003, 22:12: Message edited by: woodseye ]
