Hi, fellow Roberts nuts!

I have a Ruger Mk II in 257 Roberts, trigger job, glass bedded and floated barrel, for which I have developed a few accurate loads with Speer and Nosler 120gr. bullets, and Sierra 117, using
H4831SC at 48.5 gr. and 46.5 gr./Standard large rifle primers. (47 gr. and 48gr don't do as well. What's that all about?) Hornady SSTs don't shoot worth a darn, (And they look so cool, too, what with the red noses, and all!) except with RE 22, which does make me smile a little, Combined Technology 115s just sort of pattern.

H4350 doesn't even come close in the accuracy department, with Speer, Nosler, or Sierra, 120, 117, or 115 gr. projectiles. Any suggestions for loads I might try?

With 100 gr. bullets, I've tried Hodgdon's recommendation of 44gr, and the John Barnsness "load that works" from Handloader...46gr. Nope! That would be for deer and antelope, where they play around here, and hogs and deer in my home state of Florida, etc. at ~ 3000fps.

Also searching for a good "walking around" load for Sierra 87 gr, for varmints, and a deer load with the Sierra 90 gr. BTHP. Velocity, probably around 3000-3100fps, Using IMR4064 and H4895.

Thank you.

Welcome to AR C.C.!
I'm a Bob nut too!
I bought my girlfriend a Ruger MarkII Ultra Light several years back and it really shoots Sierra 100 grain spbt's very well using a max charge of IMR-4064. It does very well with the same powder and 90 grain Sierra hp's.
My 257 really likes the 117 Sierra's with max load of IMR-4350 incredible accuracy in that rifle. All of the above loads are WW cases and CCI large rifle primers.
I have a bunch of 70, 85, and 87 grain bullets on hand for them but I have never played with them yet in either rifle, guess I need to get to it!
Good luck with yours.

Did you ever think about trying the 75 grain v-max instead of the seirra , I get real good accuracy with it and reloader 15 from my ruger 257 roberts.

I am a Bob loony & a .257 bore fan in general.
I have a load that works extreemly well in 2 Roberts rifles.
1 is a Ruger MK2 ultra light and the other is a 24 inch custom springfield.
My load is 46 grains of H-414 under under a 100 grain barns TSX. It gets well over 3100 FPS from my 20 inch ruger and is extreemly acurate.
In either of my rifles i can think of nothing that would posibly do any better on deer or lopes.
I only took 1 mule deer buck with this load but it did an excelent job.
I have had other good loads with 100 grain balistic tips and partitions with IMR-4064 , and 120 grain Partitons with IMR-4350.
(that darn nlittle Ruger only likes spendy bullets) My custom shoots well with most any combo, But I have had nothing come close to the combination of velcoity and acuracy I get with the 100 grain Tripple shock over H-414.
This load is half a grain under max from the last barnes manual, but it is not listed in the newest version.
With other bullets and powders I only get exceptional acuacy with much slower loads.

My favorite Bob load is 46gr. of H4350 under a nosler partition. Chrongraphed at 3150 consistantly. This load is capable of groups better than I can shoot. Great Load!!

Remington M7MS. .257 Roberts. 20" bbl.

Shoots sub MOA with four different loads to date.

My GoTo loads:
44.0gr. H4350. 117gr. Sierra SGK.

Upper group = 117 SGK / H4350 load. Lower group of 3 = 110 Nosler AB load.

47.0gr. H4350. 100gr. Sierra SGK. Groups in the 1/2-3/4" range as well.

Yes, all targets are 100 yard targets.

The Bob. It just plain works.

Regards,

Robert

Ooooohh...That Mannlicher is BEAUTIFUL! Smiler Your photo does it real justice. Jealousy is such an UGLY emotion! Must...control...self. Big Grin

Your go-to load sounds intriguing, but I've never been able to get the 117 SST's to shoot well in my Ruger. And they look so neat, too what with the red tips. thumb Oh, well, I'll keep trying. Thanks

Like Snellstrom, My Ruger Ultralight likes IMR 4064. I use 100gr. bullets in either the Hornady Interlock SP or the Sierra Pro Hunter, with a slight accuracy edge going to the Sierra bullet. The magazine in the Ruger is long enough to seat the bullet out as far as you want to and I seat mine to 2.795 OAL. with the Sierra.
