Hi,

Has anyone got any load info for the 7mm-08 using varget that they can share with me? I'd be using 140gr Nosler BT bullets.....

Thanks

Darren

The latest version of the Nosler Reloading Guide lists the following for the 7-08 using 140 grain bullets and Varget.

Min load 38 grains Varget for 2610 fps
Max load 42 grains Varget for 2849 fps

These loads were shot in a 26 inch Wiseman test barrel.

In my Remington 700 Mountain Rifle with a 22 inch barrel I wound up using a little more Varget than they recommend, but was able to get up to 2850 fps as well. I got really good groups with the all of the Nosler 140 grain offerings in my 7-08.

Thank you for your reply. I did a bit of load development using varget last night. I found I was getting only 2500fps with 40grs of varget behind a 140 nosler ballistic tip.

I plan on upping the amount of varget pronto. I've got a 22" barrel as well, can I ask how much varget you used to get up to 2850fps?

Thanks again,

Darren

Darren, proceed at your own risk here, as when you go past the maximums in reloading books you can run into trouble. Having said that, my load for my 7-08 using Varget is as follows:

Remington case
WLR primer
44 grains of Varget
Nosler 140 BT
OAL 2.83 "
Velocity = 2846 fps
Average group just about an even inch.

If Varget does not work out for you, try H 4350 in your 7-08.

Thanks for your reply.

44grs!

I've just made up a load of fresh loads. The hottest I've loaded is 42grs and I thought I was pushing it with that!

Thanks again.

42.5 grains of Varget with 140 grain Barnes TSX and Fed 215 mag primer gives 2850 fps out of my Tikka T3.

My Kimber Montana with 22 inch barrel gave me 2860 fps with Nos 140 gr BT & 44 gr of AR 2208 = Varget but it was a bit hot. I now load only 43 gr for 2830 fps & reliable safe load in my rifle. Primer reseating is very firm in Winchester cases.

AR 2209 = H4350 - I load 50 gr for similar results. Accuracy is better with some bullets such as 140 TSX.

I'm using 45 grains varget,, cci large rifle, win brass, and a 120BT in 2 7mm-08s with great results, 3100fps in one and just under in the other,,,

for your info the 120 BT is a tougher bullet than the 140, the 120 has worked very well on every deer and shot I have ever taken.

I use H414 in my 7mm08 model 7. It loves hot loads the hotter I push the more accurate it gets. I am current running about 4 grains over max and getting about 2850 fps and one ragged hole groups.

How is the reseating of the primers? Is it as firm as a new or once fired case? What is the barrel length? If your barrel length is 22 inches, you may be ok but if it is a 20 or 18 inch barrel, I would suggest that you reduce at least 1 if not 2 grains.

Be safe and have fun. Cheers beer

Thanks guys. In the end I settled on 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tips with 42 grains of varget. I use CCI large rifle primers and Winchester (I think) brass.

I'm getting 2661 fps out of it. Although that's pretty slow, the accuracy and grouping is fantastic and so I'm loathe to try and raise the speed.

Thanks again for all the replies.

18 inch tube. No problems reloading I am onto my fourth and fifth reloads with some cases no troubles at all. I worked up to this load very slow. I wanted as much velocity as I could get with an accurate load. The more I stepped the velocity up the tighter the groups got. I am in way recommending this load but it works for me in my gun.

That should be very effective on deer as the lower velocity with the BT will give you better penetration. You will still get good results out to 300 yards.

Thank me later.
