I shoot 56.5 grains of IMR 4831 under a 220 Hornady RN in the 06. This load chronographed at 2511 fps, I believe that has enough thump for the nasty stuff. Free speech has been executed on the altar of political correctness.

303, Sounds like a good load in your .30/06 Sprg. I've also managed some excellent loads with heavier bullets giving good accuracy & velocity with either H-4831 & IMR 4831. Andrè, I load the Sierra 165 gr. HPBT Game King with 60.0 grs. of VV N160 - get similar looking targets AND great game-taking results, too! Cheers, Number 10

Gerry, Like you,I'd go to the 165 GK HP (a much harder bullet than the GK SP), if I was expecting boar. That's what I've done before in my 7x64, switching between 160 SP and HP, same load, same POI. Presently however, I'm only stalking Roe with the '06. All my other big game is driven, where I favour 9,3's. Here's some of my 220 gr loads. --------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 6/23/2002 Cartridge: .30-06 Springfield Firearm: Ruger M77 MkII Barrel Length: 22" --------------------------------------------------------------- Bullet: 220 gr Hornady RN Powder: 52.0 grs of IMR-4350 Case Make: W-W Primer: WLR (not magnum) C.O.L:. 3.18" (My Ruger has a short throat.) Chrono Summary (for 10 shots): Average Velocity: 2,421 fps Average Energy: 2,864 ft lbs High Velocity: 2,436 fps Low Velocity: 2,402 fps Extreme Spread: 34 fps Standard Deviation: 13 fps --------------------------------------------------------------- Bullet: 220 gr Woodleigh RN Powder: 52.0 grs of IMR-4350 Case Make: W-W Primer: WLR (not magnum) C.O.L.: 3.15" (My Ruger has a short throat and the Woodleigh RN is a rather blunt bullet.) Chrono Summary (for 10 shots): Average Velocity: 2,462 fps Average Energy: 2,962 ft lbs High Velocity: 2,479 fps Low Velocity: 2,437 fps Extreme Spread: 42 fps Standard Deviation: 12 fps --------------------------------------------------------------- Notice that the Woodleigh averaged a little faster than the Hornady with the same powder charge. I never worked up to 53.0-53.5 grs of IMR-4350. I was getting very good accuracy with 52.0 grs so I stopped there. BTW: 52.0 grs of IMR-4350 was Jack O'Connor's recommended load for 220 gr bullets in the .30-06. And that 220 gr Woodleigh even works just fine on the smaller stuff. Cheers! -Bob F.

The old Warren Page accuracy load was 55 grains of IMR 4350 and a quality 180 grain spitzer. Seems to work well in most any good 30-06.
