What's your fave .300 win and .223 load?
Hey all,

I just got a .300 WM. It's a Winchester mod 70 with a super heavy bull barrel. I got it from an ex-long range shooter and the gun looks like it's set up for 1000 yard stuff.

I also picked up a .223 in a Browning A-Bolt Medallion with a BOSS system.

If you shoot the 1000 yard game can you recommend a bullet/powder combo for the .300?

I've never loaded for the .223. Can someone recommend a good load for prarie dogs and the like? I've read a little and have seen a lot of guys like the v-max or the Sierra 52 gr Gameking. I would like to use a ball powder. I've seen data for W748.

I am not set up to do 1000 but my hunting loads are as follows:

75.5 RL 22 and 180 Accubond or SGK

71.5 RL 22 and 200 Accubond or SMK

The 200 gr loads will almost shoot 1 hole at 100. I don't think they ar eas fast as advertised but they hit in the same place time after time.

on the 223, about any powder from SR 4759 burn rate works in the 223...I shoot bullet weights from 30 grain Bergers to 80 grain A Maxes...

in the 300 Mag, I posted it on the other thread you asked...

but for hunting I use 83 grains of H 1000 and a 220 grain RN...( Sierra or Hornady)....large rifle primer..

this load is over book max.. so if you use it, work up in your rifle..

MV with a 220 grain RN is at 2950 to 2975 fps...

and yeah the load is hot, but the brass has no problems taking 5 reloads on it, so the pressure still must be okay...

Seafire, aren't you living on the edge here, just a bit?

These are my faves and are recommended for use in my guns only. You should use common sense in working up your own loads.

Thanks guys.

Now are these recommendations actual 1000 yard Match Accuracy loads or just your choice for hunting?

rc some folks may have misinterpreted your question and just gave you their most accurate load. In the 300WM the most acurate bullet out of all my rifles (I have 4) is the 190 grain SMK, I have not tried the 200's or 220's.

I'm really happy you like the 190 gr Gameking because I just received 500 of them from Midway without trying them first. I ordered them on a hunch that they would be good.

Hope they work in my gun

RC I did not say Gameking! I said SMK ie. Sierra Match King. Curiously enough, the Gamekings are reportedly very accurate out of an M1 Garand. Quite a few shooters are using it!

80 grain SMK and 24 grains Varget is my long range 223 load, know you asked for 300 Win mag but I don't load for it. Frowner

Thanks Tyler.

I got some 52 gr SMK's. I'm looking for more of a PD splattering load.

I like the 40 - 50 gr bullets with H-335 ball powder. It takes about a grain less than comparable loads with W-748 and the same bullet weights. The ballistic tips, V-maxs and Speer TNT HPs provide dramatic effects on prairie dogs and excellent accuracy in my Savage .223 and my CZ 527 in .223.

There are lots of good powders for .223. H-322 is another good one - short grains and temp insensitive. W-748 works well, but I have gotten better velocity and comparable accuracy with H-335 with the lighter bullets.

I load a maximum charge of H-335 behind a sierra 50 gr. SX bullet. very accurate and i get good air time on pd's.

My .300 longrange load is 79 of H1000 under the 190 Berger VLD, Norma brass and a 215 Match primer seated .015 into the lands. It will hold 1/2 MOA out to 730 yards, which is the longest yardage I have on my private range, at least for now. My RL22 load fell apart at 500.

hard to beat a 52 Sierra with 25 or so grains of H335 in most .223's with normal twist.
