Hey guys, got back from the range yesterday after loading up some low recoil rounds for my father who just had shoulder surgery. They'll also be used by my girlfriends father who has arthritis in his shoulder. (Oh the joys of still being young....) Three different 3 shot groups measured betweed .550" and .773" Here's the load.
Remington 2X case (Neck sized only) 125 grn. Remington PSP 49 grn. IMR4895 CCI LR Primer OAL: 3.003"
Try taking a light to medium weight bullet, and then use 60% of the maximum load of H4895 as published by Hodgdons. (Never try this with anything slower than H4895!!). I have tried this formula in the .243, 6.5x55, .280, .30-30, and .30-06. Every one of them was very, very accurate with extremely light recoil.
I might also add to this thread that the 30/06 is an EXCELLENT cast bullet rifle. Get bullets sized .310 or .311 and finding a good load is usually not a problem. Also very accurate, very low recoil and very deadly.

For middling loads (suitable for short-range deer hunting, etc.) I've had good accuracy from IMR 3031 and IMR 4895. 3031 has worked well in my .270 and .375 H&H; 4895 worked well in the .280 Rem. and .30-06.
For really low-recoil loads around 2000 fps(suitable for plinking, etc.) XMP-5744 is the go-to powder.

I believe Hodgon has a whole listing of low recoil loads for the '06 using 125 grain bullets. One guy that comes into the gun shop says he gets 1" groups. The only thing I suggested to him, prior to him trying to load, was to put some filler in the form of pillow stuffing fibers to keep the powder near the primer for more consistant, and thus more accurate, loads.

The Speer book that I had lists reduced loads for all recipes. For the 06 it said to use a 180g. bullet over 31g. IMR 4198. So I figured if pressure was safe with a 180g. it should also be safe with a 125g. Rem SP which is what I stuffed them with. I'm quite happy with the results, now all I need is a chrony and I'll know what's really goin on.
I like experimenting so I also load the Hodgson formula of 60% of max for 4895, works good also. Hodgson.com list "Youth Loads" for many calibers.
One of my stranger recipes that I got from an old book is: 14g. Unique with any weight bullet that I have laying around to burn up.
