If you go with the 45-90, you can still fire the 45-70 cartridge in the rifle, just as you can fire a 44 special in a 44 mag. It is just a bit of added flexability. I believe the same goes for the 45-110, but I'm not positive.

Love those big-bore rifles!

Well, I was going to ask who machined and chambered the Barrel blank for you, but I just noticed you are in Australia, so it doesn't matter. The laws wouldn't allow me to send a firearm that far even if I wanted to! Your county's firearms laws don't agree with me, or I with them.

Good Luck!

While I said you could fire the 45-70 in a 45-90, I didn't say anything about accuracy!

My Siamese mauser came with a 1 in 20 twist. Where did you get the 1 in 14
barrel?

Gentlemen,
What I'm seeing on this thread is a lot of B/S from bookworms & theorists!

Ruger No.1 in 45/70 suffers from 2 problems. Lack of rifle weight to make heavy loads comfortable to shoot and at 1 in 22", the wrong twist rate to use 500+gn bullets. Show me a 458 factory rifle that has a 1 in 22" twist!

As for firing 45/70's in 45/90's, well it will work but you can never achieve proper relationships between bullet & lands to achieve anything like acceptable accuracy.

One of the finest and most usefull 45/70 rifles I have used was a Siamese mauser with a 1 in 14" twist barrel. Loaded with 500gn Hornady SP's at 1700fps it was still a very powerfull rifle and would group 5 shot strings almost MOA.

My current 45/120 rifle has a 1 in 14" barrel and will shoot jacketed bullets faster than a 458 Lott. My 45/70 Ruger would shoot 350/405 gn bullets exceptionally well but next to useless for anything else.

If you want a 'Big Game' rifle, spend your dollars on something purpose built;
