My son is getting bigger (13 going on 14) and can handle more recoil so we are working up a little heavier load for his Ruger flatbolt in .284 Win. Last year he took his first Mule Deer buck at 180 yards and his first Bull Elk at 75-80 yards using this rifle and Speer 130 grain bullets loaded to a mild 2650 fps. The powder of choice was IMR-4350 and this week when I wanted to step him up to a 150 grain Rem Core Lokt the IMR-4350 didn't disappoint us. We found that 52 grains of 4350 shoots .5" for a 3 shot group. The rifle is all original with the same vintage 2-7 Leupold scope on it a hand me down from my dad who bought it new. This load is no hot rod but should give him more knockdown than his old 130 grain load. Sighted in at 200 yards for zero it is 2" high at 100 yards and 3.5" low at 250 yards which is his limit with a solid rest. Load shows 2,000 ft pounds of energy at 100 yards. I've tried several different powders in this rifle ( H4895, IMR 4064, H380 and more) and the favorite no matter what bullet weight always comes back to IMR-4350. Good luck with yours. | ||

Sounds like you have found a good load. I copied it to my "Gun Stuff" file for later use. My oldest son has a 284 Win barrel on an Encore frame. The last time he was home, we loaded up some ammo for it, but I don't remember the load data, but most likely it was close to what you have. The 150 grainer is a better choice for deer and elk, although we know almost any weight of bullet can handle the task. Tell your son I said good luck this hunting season. It's just around the corner.
