.458 splat
Has anyone had any experience with .458 bullets that perform like a varmint round?

When I say behave like a varmint round I mean:
1. They dont penetrate. [Eek!]
2. They explode just inside the hide. [Eek!]
3. Animal (meat) looks like it was hit with a truck (not shot) [Embarrassed]
4. Maybe you didnt have enough of the animal left to get a decent meal? [Embarrassed]

I am just started reloading the 45-70. Most of the time I will be hunting deer. But when/if I have an opportunity to hunt Bison, Moose, Elk, Africa, I want to be prepared. A guy can dream cant he? [Wink]

Currently I have a supply of 300gr jhp, 350gr jhp, 405gr jsp, 400gr SOFT cast lead bullets. My guess is I can push the 300 and 350 beyond their design spec. I assume someone has already experience this and can tell me the point at which they achieved too much velocity.

Thanks

The 350 Hornady is a tough bullet, you can't drive it too fast in a 45-70.

GSF1200 is correct. I have used 300gr. Sierra,350gr Hornady and 400gr.Speer in my 4570 No1. If kept at 1800fps or less the 300gr. and the 400gr. do fine.... But the 350gr. Hornady is my favorite bullet in the 45/70. My loads go 1900fpsin the No1.
I also use the 350 Hornady RNSP in my 450 No2 at 2330fps. It still holds together at those velocities when it heavy pig bones. I recommend it highly.
